stock head- rpm- power.
At what rpm should I give up on the stock heads and cam? I have a 5200rpm in the msd and the shift light is set at 5k. Am I giving up too early?

I think your very close to having it right. The best way to tell shift points is to have a dyno (to get curve info from) and then your trans type (for gear ratios) to figure best shift points for each gear.

Most guys with stock heads shift 5800-6000, and advancing the timing would help a bit on the top end. Might kill some low end torque, so launch hard. I usually use the "highway feel" in 3rd (AOD) to see when it starts to feel like it's starving for air, and make ~250rpm lower a shift point. A chassis dynamometer would be best, but I'm a cheap bastage at this point. :D
Is everything else stock? |
I'll be going to the track on tuesday, so I'll try some different shift points. But every pass is different depending on launch and tire spin. I hope to be able to get into the 13's, all I need is .2ths. If I power shift the thing off the msd that might get a little more than just shifting after a 2k launch. which is what I was doing.plus since the last outing I have also added pulleys, moved the battery to the trunk and added a elec. fan which is not finished yet so I'll take it all off. Other mods are 1-5/8 shortys, mac o/r x-pipe, Mac cat back, msd 6al,msd coil and 8.5 wires, trickflow street intake,70mm tb,sudframe conn,no/ac,no smog,3.73's,t5,welds,26x10.5m/t. 5inch tach etc.

I think 5200rpm is about it on the stock heads. But I did manage a 13.90@98 Because of the pulleys and taking off the clutch fan. Only a dyno would prove it, but it didn't seem to help running it any higher.

Do you have a good tach?
|
Yes, I just put in a new autometer 5 tach w/shift light. Connected it to my msd. Now I see how messed up the stock tach really is. I could probably get a better ET with more practice.
