Stock intake manifold

Is the lower or the upper piece more restrictive to air flow?

slo95 01-04-2001 09:35 AM

This is just a guess, but the lower. I say this because I have seen kits from Holley, for example that offer a ported lower, cam, and timing chain that use the stock upper. I saw an ad at http://www.sacramento-mustang.com/cc...lley300505.htm - I have never used it, but might be worth looking into.

95mustanggt 01-04-2001 11:23 AM

I noticed that they claim the Cobra intake kit is good to 400 HP while the GT40 is good to 425 HP. The cobra is much cheaper but can be ported and honed to flow better. What does this cost?

Im looking to keep my car looking stock and that kit looks like it would be perfect. Anyone know how much it would cost to get a cam put in at a garage? I know I can do the lower peice and timing chain, just dont want to put in a cam.

The GT-40 and Cobra lowers are the same, but don't match up well with the E7 heads on a stock GT. They're designed to match the ports on the GT-40 heads. Considering the labor involved in changing the lower and the timing chain you might as well put the cam in also. I plan on using the Holley lower mentioned in this post, but not with the Holley cam. Since I have 1.7 rockers I might use the Crane 2031 cam. Anyhow I'll keep the forum updated as I go along with this fun hobby!

I have ran a ported stock. Extrude hone one if you want the sleeper look. If not go cobra. The cobra will mate up just fine. I have had mine with Edelbroc heads, GT-40 heads, and now I am back on E7s again.

I can get a lower intake for way cheaper than both upper and lower. Would it be worth getting a GT-40 Lower and keeping the stock upper? I plan to use GT-40P heads (some time in the future though). I don't think I'll ever throw on a SC or break 400 HP. What is the stock upper good to?

The GT40 lower will not match up to the stock upper.

The Holley Systemax I intake is not actually a ported lower, it is in fact a modified design. Basically, it has straighter intake runners than the stock lower. The complete Systemax I kit consists of this lower, a Lunati cam, and a new timing chain. Holley claims 271hp @ 5100rpm, and 328 ft/lbs @ 2900rpm. The lower intake is available seperately as a special order item.

The Cobra and GT-40 share the same lower intake. Personally, I consider the Cobra a better choice, since it's upper intake can be ported, while the GT-40 cannot.

Installing a cam will require lifting the engine, or removing the front end and radiator, so you can slide the cams in and out of the block.

Dan,
the stock pieces intakes and heads are restrictive. If you change one or the other you are just really moving the bottle neck of the system some where else. Now since I know you have that sweet set( http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif nobody else ever gives you the credit you deserve) of ported E7's I would port the lower intake and or atleast port match them to the intake so your flow has a smooth transition. The Holley Systemax I lower does as stated by Moxie straightens the runners out. As far as the Cobra intake not matching the E7's very well, I have never heard that before, now I know they were made to match the GT40 style heads but if you port match them it won't matter anyway. Dan if you attemp porting the lower just be careful not to break through on the runners I am not sure exactly how much metal is there, but if you do I have 2 of them laying around. Keep polishing away buddy...

Extrude Honing the upper and lower cost around $500.00 they do send flow numbers. My dad had his 93 Cobra done it outflows the GT40 by a good bit http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif

Hey Thanks Rick,
I hope the E7's do what Ray says they will, I have just about the same in them as a new set of Alum. a/m would have run me. Probably just have this puppy extude honed now that I put all this work into polishing it.
The Holley lower is supposed to help, but I dont know anyone who just changed the lower.

My buddy is running 12.80's all day long with stock ported and polished heads, intakes, F-cam, Mac Headers, full flowmaster exhaust, 5 speed, 4:10's, stock airbox, stock tb.

The GT40 is a waste of money(unless your after looks) and flows almost identical numbers as the cobra. Buy the cobra. Extrude honing is expensive, as previously mentioned($500), and not worth that much money. Why not get a trick flow if looking for a new intake? Out flows cobra, and is same price. And you dont have to remove the front end to change the cam. Only the radiator, and the A/C condenser, which can be relocated without disconnecting it, causing freon drainage.

$500 is very expensive, I agree. The problem is I am in the middle of buffing my stock upper and lower and am not real keen on doing this again on a Cobra Intake. Probably am going to have to however, as the cost of extrude honing far exceeds the cost of a used Cobra.

LX XLR8R 01-09-2001 12:06 PM

where can i buy just that lower intake????that would be perfect for my extrude honed upper i got laying around for my sleeper car

LX XLR8R,
I was at www.stangparts.com. The URL that has the part is:

http://www.stangparts.com/home.cfm?s...products/index

I was looking under "product Inventory" then "performance items.

There is a GT40 EFI lower for $349 and a Cobra Lower for $149 descibed as "'94-'95 Cobra lower intake...uses GT40, Cobra or Box style upper intake..('86-'93 requires drilling and tapping of air temp sensor hole)"

Check it out.

I would rather have the GT40 over the cobra anyday, The GT40 is the only one that uses round separate tubing and it produces a much better power curve than ANY other manifold. The peak power of the Cobra might be close to the GT40 but not across the entire powerband. The trickflow R manifold (not the street version) does make about 15 more ponies than the GT40 but again not across the whole band and it makes those extra horses at like 68-7 grand which is too high rpm for most of us. The Holley lower will not fit a factory upper either, the ports are shaped differently. It might be possible to port match the two together but it would be hard and might not work so well.
