Angry Stock timing, 93 octane and I still get detonation????HELP!

I have a serious problem. My timing was never altered from stock, a 72 year old woman owned my car so I know it wasn't touched. My problem is when under moderate acceleration at about 3000 RPM's I get a pinging from the engine, NO MATTER WHAT OCTANE I use. I have a stock 5.0 with A MAC cat-back and MSD 6AL, that's all, it pings with or without the MSD connected. Plugs are gapped at.045. The only thing that I can think of is that I switched over my car from a AOD to a T-5 and I left the stock computer in the car. My car has 80,000 miles on it, 68,000 of which were pampered by the old lady, too bad I can't say the same for the other 12,000, but that is STILL no reason for the Detonation,. Please Help I am going nuts!!!! Thank

You need to check the timming!!!!!!! Dont drive it and mess it all up (your Car)It could be you need a timing chain.

Yes, check your timing. Do you know if she had grand kids that she let use the car? Could she have duped you like Barney Fife?

What year is your car, BTW? Is it by any chance a 95? Probably not. It would take an old lady years to put on 68k.

Shouldn't your plugs be gapped at .052-.053? I think there is a difference between AOD and T5 computers as far as timing curves go, so you may want to get a computer out of a T5 equiped stang.

What kind of plugs are in it right now? I thought the computers would be the same. I thought I read somewhere in one of the Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords where they did a swap from an SN95 AOD-E to T-5 and I think they just left the harness there because the computer only sends info, doesn't recieve any from the tranny. This is gonna bug me now, I'll have to look for that magazine now ****** !!

I'm not certain about there being a difference. Whether or not the tranny sends info to the computer, the computer can still be programmed in such a way to compensate for the AOD.

Your computer is fine with what you have.

If it is pinging at part throttle around 3000 rpm, and maybe not at WOT, I would look into replacing the EGR valve. That is probably your culprit.

exgmguy, Not only does it ping under part throttle but it also pings if I shift gears hard. Still think it's the EGR? Jimberg, my car is a 93.

On the SN95's the ecu's are different, but an AODE computer will work with a T-5. I've never done a conversion on a 87-93, but I was always told that the computers would NOT interchange. Hell, call up one of the big salvage yards that sells complete conversion kits. I talked to Daves Mustang parts a couple of times, and even though I didnt buy anything from them, they were still friendly and helpful.
