Post What Size Motor Can I Fit In A 68 GT???

Ok, I Was Really Into The 87-93 5.0 Mustangs, But I Love The Old 68 GT/CS, So I Think Will Keep My 88GT As A Daily Driver, And Make An All Out 68GT Into A GT/CS Look-A-Like, And A Drag Strip Screamer.

What Kind Of Motor Would You Suggest In A 68GT For Drag Strip Duity??? Also, What Tranny?

I Want It To Be A Motor I Could Buy From An Autowrecker (Any Motor I Could Find, Maby A 460?) & Rebuild & Show Some Serious Numbers.

What Mods Do I Need To Put This New Motor/Tranny In???
Do The Suspension On The Older Cars Need To Be Beefed Up If I Run It On Slicks???

How Fast Could I Expect To Run???

Thanks

Since the 68 came with a 390 and later CJ with a 428. Any of the FE family will fit with no problem.

I have seen a 429 in a 68. They had done some surgery to the spring towers for clearance.

Drag use get a Lennco or Liberty trans.

Defentily go with an FE. U can find lots of 390s in junk yeards from trucks and stuff like that. Edelbrock makes a good intake and heads for it also. Get ur self a good c-6 Mine is by art carr with a TCI manule valve body. Yes beff up the suspinsion. I just bought 5 1/5 leaf springs with racing shakcles to take the 3 leaf springs place. If it is just a drag car. U can find allthe same type of things like u would use on a late model. Like i have moroso front drag spring with the lakewood 90/10 shocks and the 50/50 rear. With south side lifter bars. U can run as fast as u want i have seen 600 HP 390s NA. U can put any carb. nitrous kit on there and go faster also. I hope this helps some.

ok, i am not sure what FE stands for, the car will be driven on nice days on the street, and to the track, but i will not be going around corners very fast(just the speed limit).

what kind of power could i expect from a 390 stock 390?

what kind of prices would i look to pay for a new(rebuilt) complete 428CJ

will the stock suspension hold up with a BB, or if not, what do i need to do?

would an old toploader do the job for tranny(i really like standards)?

can i get a lot of power out of a small block?

sorry for all the questions...

Holy crap just looking at the edlebrock site they have a Victor intake for the FE. Looks like i will have lots of work to do win that thing comes out. It is good up to 8500rpm.
can u imagine an 428 at 8500rpm. Very nasty to say the least. with that intake and the edelbrock cj heads u could easily have a NA low 10 second car. Put a 150 shot on there who knows how fast it could go.

if i put a 390 in the 68, what kind of power is a stock 390(not sure which years to look at) going to make?

What type of vehicles came with a 427?
what can i find a 428 in?

why will a 460 not fit? i can get one of those & a matching c6 for under 1k.

is low 12s easier with one of these old cars & a 390 than making my 88gt that fast?

U can buy a 68 with a 390 in it. U can also buy a 68 with a 428. The 428 68 will cost lots of money. That will not come cheap.
428 where put in 68 trough 70. In mustangs. there are some cugars with them and some torinos. Not sure of the years but the motor was only made form 68 through 70 the cobra jets that is. NOt sure about the passenger 428 but i wouldnt bother with one of those. The are tons more 390s as they came in trucks and vans and stuff like that. stock horespower i have no idea. top loaders i don't know about either. I would just stick with ur 88gt it will be very easy to make it a low 12.
