tranny swap?

Hey I've got a 03 gt and as you all know the stock tranny has caused lotssss of people trouble, including myself (I know of ATLEAST 12ish people with the same problem). I'm going to have ford replace the tranny soon hopefully, but why would I want to put the same crappy tranny back in?? I know this would prob NEVER happen butt, do you think maybe I can have them get a different/ better tranny from tremec and I can pay the difference?? Does that sound like it could ever be a possibility? How about an 03 cobra tranny? would it match up? How are those 6 speeds by the way?? any help would be greatfull because this is such a stupid/aggrivating problem, and I really dont want the same crap put back on my car....thanks

I don't know if they will let you or not but those t56 are nice, i hear they are bullit proof too.drove my friends z28 with one. They put that 6 speed in everything, camero, cobra, vette, viper all that stuff so it can't be too bad. Plus u can get high gears and still get good highway mpg.

just my 2cents.

I always wondered how those 6 speeds were....soo do you suggest that if the option comes up to go with the 6 speed if I could? My stang is a daily driver, and I do drive on the highway a decent amount...I've got 3.73's right now, do you/anyone think that it would be safe to go with 4.10's, or would the highway driving be considerably worse? I'm only planing on making the occasional trip to the track, and maybe a race here or there in the streets on the weekends. Any drawbacks with the 6spd?? sorry about all the questions! Just very currious.... thanks

Re: tranny swap?

if they are replaceing the tranny on a warranty type deal you would have to talk to the service manager there, most dealerships are required to have the core for warranty, they also use your vehicle information, i don't know how exactly ford does it but just call up there and ask the service manager if you could upgrade to a T-56 or along those lines, but if that fails, if I were you I would go to a junkyard and get another tranny and get a high performance rebuild kit that can stand the abuse we all throw at our stangs

I love my T-56. They are definitely much tougher than your stock 5-speed and are good for like 400 lb-ft of torque, but they're not quite bulletproof either. You can upgrade them with Viper big input and output shafts and steel 3-4 forks though if you ever ended up making more power than that.
As for gears, don't fear the 4.10s. They only made a 1-2 mpg difference on my 2V setup compared to the stock 3.27s.

are you still using the stock shifter? I broke my stock trans driving around town with the sorry excuse for a shifter ford put in it. an aftermarket shifter went in right when i got it back (fixed under extended warranty) and i haven't had any hint of a problem since.

Re: tranny swap?

my stock trans has 60k miles on it over 500 drag strip passes and 350 of them on D/R and 100 on slicks and no problems Oh and I launch at 5000+ (making 446 rwhp 423rwtq)

I just think people need to get a shifter and learn how the trans likes to be shifted instead of beating the snot out of it and it will last just fine
