I think the only reason for the lower power rating is that the 4cyl version uses bigger gears (more multiplication).
From what I understand it is the different ratios that makes the difference.
I have never seen any confirmation that the materials used were any different.

I would run the 4 cyl trans til it dies. In the mean time start building a custom t5 with the exact ratios you want.
