Default T_M's Official 351 Fuelie Project Thread

So this is it. Plug your nose and jump in.

I officially kicked off my project today when I picked up the Donor car. It is a 1988 Coupe.

The car is SUPER clean even for having 225,000km on it. It is totally unmolested, it is not even frame connected. I had my paint and body guy look at it and he was amazed. The floors, the frame, the trunk pan, everything looks brand new. There are only 3 spots on the bosy where there is some surface bubbling.

It came with aftermarket 17" rims, but they will be swaped out for Cobra R rims eventually. The car runs amazing and is very strong. It is almost a shame that I will be tearing it apart soon.

My goal in the end is a naturally aspirated car with approx. 550hp/550tq. I am leaning heavily towards doing a 438 Windsor Stroker. The engine absolutely must go under the stock hood.

Here is a convoluted list of parts so far. It is a cut and paste from excel so it is messy as hell, but it gives you an idea of what will be coming for the car. This is not a final list and things will more than likely change(ie I haven't made a final decision on the rearend), but not much. I am going to bump the budget up by 10k to make sure everything gets done properly.

550hp from a N/A 351 stroker is very ambitious, and I can guarantee you're not getting there without a roller cam unless you're willing to completely sacrifice any drivability.

Not that a 550hp N/A stroker will be all that streetable anyway.

I am devising a magic combo My last car was around 450 NA on a Fuelie Windsor and it had very good street manners. An extra 100 horse won't be too bad if everything works out as planned.

On paper, so far, I have 481hp and 510tq and there is a lot of room for tweaking. That is with a streetable peak of 5500 RPM btw. I will sacrifice some hp if I can squeeze more torque. That is also using a cam (.538/.550)with a 1.6 rocker. I will consider bumping to a 1.7 and see what happens.

I am going to go full roller and will probably end up going with a Lentech AOD race tranny rather than a Manual. I'm also pushing for 11:1 compression on pump gas with an SCT tune. There is already a car around here running that compression on pump gas no probs.

Why must it go under the stock hood? The 91 I work on all the time has a cowl on it and it needs it too for the clearance. I assume there are some tricks we could do to get the engine lower in the bay, but probably would be at the sacrifice of some of the performance....which you want to keep from the sound of your post.

With a custom wing on the back, seems to me a cowl would fit right in with the theme...including the "monster tach".

The stock hood is a must because I am essentially rebuilding a car I had 6 years ago that was wrecked by someone running a red light. It also had a 351 Fuelie in it and I stuck it under a stock hood.

The car had custom paint and I am redoing that exact paint job. I had bought the car with the custom paint before I put the 351 in it and I didn't want to have to repaint a hood, not to mention it makes a hell of a sleeper to have it all stuffed under the stock hood.

There will be no performance cuts taken as the motor can be effectively dropped by using a drop tubular kframe and or drop engine mounts.

If worse comes to worse and I have to get something with a small cowl, I will. I am confident that it will go under the stock hood though.

Yea I was wondering, why not a roller cam? But There are 9 sec non- roller 351's i know of.
At that horsepower level, You'll need a cage either way.

No offense bro, but I'm throwing the big red flag on this one.
Not only is that "doable", I AM doing it, with alot less cubes. Dyno sheet tells me 609HP and 596 ft./lbs. of torque on naturally aspirated 347 cubic inches. And I'd be willing to bet, that Jeff can post up MUCH better numbers with only .500 cam lift!

Don't forget, that Street Warrior is a spec camshaft, NA class! Those cars are running NINES all day long!

YES, I am running a roller cam, cost me some cheddar, but that sucker was worth every penny. YES, I understand that this thing is coming apart sooner or later, probably sooner, and VIOLENTLY.

BUT!!!! There is nothing that will put a smile on your face more than driving a car 1.5 hours to the track, lettin a little air outta the tires, running an 11.06 @ 123 MPH N/A! Then puttin air back in, stop at BP for PUMP GAS, and driving 1.5 hours back home!!!

500+ horse is VERY streetable! Look at the magazine featuring sub 9 sec cars running in True Street. Sure, that's a one time deal, but I'm here to tell you it CAN, and IS being done! Good friend of mine runs 9.70's all day, and drives the car every chance he gets.

It's possible bro!

Ya just gotta believe!!!!

We are hoping to get the 408w on a dyno here soon. Now that we have the fuel system all beefed up with a decent set of heads, I will let you know what it does.

Ok here are pics of the donor car I picked up a few days ago.

go go porno red interior

Some Engine Build Stuff:

I have decided on this basic Engine build:

Victor EFI Intake
Victor CNC heads with a 2.10 Int, 1.60 exh.
Ford Competition Windsor Block (formerly called the SVO Block, new from ford) with the 9.200" deck, 4 bolt mains and a 7.749 main journal diameter.
Eagle Specialties Competition 418 Windsor Stroker kit
46# injectors
Pro-M 80mm Mass Air unit calibrated to said injectors
75mm Throttle Body
1.6 roller rockers
CompCams Roller 35-462-8, .576 lift with 244 duration @50
Running ~10.7:1

And some other stuff

On paper that puts me at 556hp at 6000rpm and 546ft/lbs torque at 4500rpm. Right in my target pocket as far as power goes. That puts me at an estimated 10.87 ET (when only factoring power and weight) with the car weighing 3100lbs (by the time I'm done with it).

This is going to be one sick ride.

Ok, so here's the skinny. I am dropping the plans for the Windsor all together...which means this thread is now in the wrong forum.

Anyway, I just bought an 03 Cobra that went sideways into a pole. It has some mods (pully etc) and is dyno'd at 587 bhp. For the price I paid and for the power this car is putting out, it is a steal compared to what I was planning.

I am going to do a full drive train swap, minus the IRS, and also I am going to get the interior swapped as much as possible. My plans for paint have not changed, although I will definately need some kind of raised hood to clear the snout on the supercharger. I am thinking a Cobra R hood form Cervini will suffice.

I am no stranger to Windsor swaps, but this is completely new for me altogether. It should be interesting. I will continue to document the entire project, though I will probably have to get this thread moved.

Pics of the Cobra to follow once I get it to the project location.

There was no boot. The shifter in the car is retarded. And the wheel is from a 1986 car, but that will be changed to the new steering wheel soon enough.

ah i was just playin around, the steering wheel actually looks alright.

Btw, A friend of mine already did an interior swap from an 03 cobra to a foxbody, he even put in the seatbelts, had to modify some stuff to get it to fit, but the seats really look nice in there......keep posted.
