TCI C-6 work well?
Hi, I'm considering buying a TCI C-6(Sm bell) for my 85GT in place of the slipping AOD. -Is this a good move? Thanks for the imput.
My car doesn't see much high-way use. |
A C4 can handle plenty of power and doesn't rob as much power or weigh as much as a C6.
I have a TCI Streetfighter C4 and TCI stall in my 79 Pace Car and am happy with the performance and reliability so far. |
I don't mean to try to change your mind, but I am going to tell you my experience with TCI. I had a 69 Grande with an 87-93 HO motor. I ordered a TCI Street Fighter C-4 to replace my older one and a TCI Breakaway Torque Converter. I had to send the torque converter back, because they stamped the right part number on the wrong one, and sent me one that wouldn't work. Then after waiting for that to go and come back, I installed it all and wound up having to take the valve body out of the tranny and send it back because it wouldn't shift into 3rd correctly. So after waiting for that to go and come back, it ran right......for a few months and then crapped out on me right after a year, which of course is when the warranty ran out). I didn't abuse this tranny. Oh and I also had to make repeated long distance calls to get the shipping fee refunded to me for when I returned those parts. The people were nice and Jerry was the guy I dealt with mostly. He was very considerate. I will say that. However I won't buy any tranny's from TCI. Maybe I was just unlucky, but maybe not.

OK thanks for your 2 cents. THe trans is being offered on E-Bay. Starting bid $225. --500 miles on it according to the owner. He also states he had it on a 289 and that the C-6 was "too much Trans"..
|
If I remember correctly, the TCI C4 was rated at up to 400hp. So with the 289, and the C6 which I'm sure is intended for more hp than the C4, it probably was quite a bit of tranny for his motor.

The C6 weighs more than a C4. It also takes 20hp more to run the C6 compared to the C4. Be very, very careful when you buy something on eBay. It's a "blind purchase", you don't know what condition it's in. You can't believe what the other guy says about this transmission. It could be a piece of "she-et". You should be able to buy a used C4 at a scrap yard or something.

I've got to agree. A C6 has much more rotating mass than a C4 and will such up a lot more power. Aside from that it's super heavy and a LOT more tranny than you'd ever need behind a regular 5.0. If you bought a well built C4 and could blow it up with a stock-blocked 5.0, I'd like to shake your hand. Aside from all that, buying car stuff on Ebay is just tricky business unless you plan on rebuilding it anyway. Even if it does have 500miles on it...thik of how long it's been since Ford used C6s in cars or trucks and how long it's been sitting.
