Thermostats
I will be replacing my thermostat tomorrow and it's a 195. I was wondering if a 160 would be any better? What's the scoop on thermostats? I know the cooler your engine stays the more power you make.
Should I take the 195 back and get a lower one? Or is there even that big of a difference? |
Stick with the 195. If you do decide to go lower, go no lower than a 180. A 160 could possibly cause your car to stay in open loop mode which wouldn't be good, or, if your radiator isn't that good, it could just stay open and never let the coolant stay in the radiator long enough cool down.

I put a 160 in mine and I have not had any problems in the past or currently. I got a new radiator too, and my car runs so cool that you can easily touch the intake with your hands and not burn it. I personally would drop down to no lower then 160. Just don't run it without a thermastat, cuz the stupid computer will mess up if you don't have one in

Thermostat recommendation
Stay with the stock 195 degree thermostat for best overall results from your Mustang.
I recommend the Ford thermostat, available at any dealer. |
Exactly!

Running your engine too cold will cause premature wear, also. The oil needs to be hot to flow.

I will be sticking with the 195. :) You have some good points jimberg. No oil flow would really suck. :) Thanks for all the help guys!
