timing and pinging

set timing for 1st time on this mustang. it was set at 0 degrees! i know to disconnect the spount connecter, stock is 10*, i went up to 14*. what a difference! my question is, how can i be sure there is no pinging? i just assume that it would only ping under load. i figure under load, it would sound like marbles in the engine! what does pinging sound like, can u hear it at idle, and how to best listen for it?

The only time I have ever heard it on my car is at full throtle and it just sounds like a tick not a ping. IT is very speratic and not in any pattern. That is just what I've experienced.

yes, it will be under load, if your in a higher gear and put some load on it, not full throttle you'll hear the ping if its pinging. keep in mind that 87 octane these days is horrible, 93 is best run and recomended.
