Red face 24 degree's timing??

My car has been running good since I put it together, but it has a bucking at 2000 rpm! Very anoying! Well I set my timing at 12 degree's when I put it together and it ran good, but it was doing the bucking thing bad. Well I tried to rotate the rotor counter clockwise one tooth and reset the timing. When I first started the motor (timing not set yet) it started and idled the best it has ever? When I checked the timing it was at 26 degree's with the spout out? I lowered it to 22 and ran the car. WOW it ran the best it ever has with no ping???? Well I got nervous and lowered it to 18 with the spout out and drove the car again. It bucked terrible and felt slower. Then I set it at 24 and again it ran better then ever? I don't hear any pinging and the car runs better then it ever has? I can't make sense of this. Has anyone seen anything like this before???? I'm stumped. The thing that worries me is that I don't hear any pinging, but I do have long tube headers and off road exhaust with 2 chamber flows, and I think the car might be to load to hear the pinging??

Sounds like the distributor is off a tooth? When you set it at 12 did the distributor look like it was in the right position? You can be off a tooth and still set the base timing right, it will not run right though. It will buck.

Ever since the TFS heads my car has bucked at 2000rpm also. I eventually worked it away and it was with more timing.

Ive run as much as 23 deg initial timing with 87 octane and no pings. No one can explain it.

I just had my distrubtor out for a while for some motor work. I put it back in and have yet to retime the car. But its bucking again at 2000rpm and I just set the timing by ear.

So the best conclusion I can come to is these tfs heads just love timing!?!

Thanks for the reply!!! Our setup is simular. This has been driving me crazy! I just don't understand why the timing is so far advanced, but it runs so much better. This is the best the car has run. Before you pulled your dis. how long did you run it at 23? I can't believe how much better the car is running? I'm just nervous about tearing something up?

I ran my car over 9 months with it at 22degrees timing with 87 octane fuel. It ran great, and did best at the track there.

Must be something with the TFS TW and E-303 cam.

Thanks so much!! I didn't get to many other response's. This is odd, but if it runs good, who cares?
