To correctly set the initial ignition timing on your 5.0 you must remove the 'spout' connecter; it's a small electric connector that hangs off the distributor wiring harness, right in front. No problem to remove, but don't lose it. I suggest putting it in your pocket but remember to replace it when you're finished setting the timing. Your engine will run poorly without it.
Fill up with 92 octane or better before advancing the timing.
Try 12 degrees, then 14, then 16 and listen for 'ping' (detonation). Back off to the previous setting once you get pinging under load.
14 degrees is average maximum advance on a stock 5.0 but engines differ and you may need more or less. Experiment.
