Default Top Speed with 3.73 gears

I went ot the analyzer and plugged in my 5100 RPM max i can get in 5th with my 3.73 and 26 diameter tires

It says i would be going like 155

Is this actualyl right or is my tire diameter to big i didnt veen check all i knwo is my tires are ont eh pony rims and they are taller then the stock ones

At teh same RPM with 2.73 however it says liek over 200MPH

I am pushing somewher around 300 horses at the rear wheels....

Do they gears really affect top speed?

Or is it the wind resistance that makes it stay aroudn 150?

THanks guys

I have 3.73's and i have been a little over 150 in my car. I was actually at about 155. It took a while to get there but it will do it if you have the power. If i stayed in it longer I would have been able to do almost 160.

Max speed is based on horsepower and aerodynamic. The calculator only determines how fast the car would be able to go in a vacuum. In your case, I would say 155 was about right. The 200mph would be impossible.

Gears ALL MOST never Stop the stop speed well like a 4.10 or more will But the wind makes more of a Diff that the gears do Right at about 150-155mph the wind resistance realy comes in at there Any more and you will need more HP stock the Car Fox body have done 144-145mph long time to get there.

Gears affect top speed since peak horsepower rpm is fairly constant. The higher the gear ratio, the faster you will exceed the max horsepower RPM. If horsepower remained constant throughout an infinite rpm range, then yes, gears would only affect how long it took to get there.

What I am saying is You just need more Power But a gear swap is not going to give you like a 20MPH incress
like hiw going 5th at 5100 a gear chage will not make Much diff

When I had my 2.73's and I was more stock, around the fastest I could go was 135-140 MPH. I could ownly use 4th gear, 5th gear and the stock HP just could not over come the wind resistance.

3.73 will just allow you to use 5th gear as your top speed gear now. it won't affect you topspeed unless the rpm's change brings you down too far down on your horsepower curve. 5th gear with 3.73's is numericaly lower that 2.73 in 4th.

I have had my 3.73 geared car to approximately 175 mph. But I do have 28" tires.

155 is possible with 300 h.p.

I did the Silver State Classic Road Race in Sep 2000 and went through the official radar trap at 148.
At that time all I had was the stock motor (212 rwhp), Kenne Bell ram air, Pulleys. and stock H-pipe with Race Magnum mufflers.

It took 2 miles to get to that speed and that was absolutely all she had.

I completely agree with the wind resistance problem. Fox body cars are kinda like a brick compared to more slippery body styles. I had no windshield wipers, radio antenna, or front license plate. Had tape around headlights & windshield moldings. Also had 44 psi (cold)in all tires.

BTW bench racing is way safer than actually doing this. One slip-up or tire failure will most likely spell disaster for you and maybe somebody else.

Don't forget that speedos can be way fast or slow at high speed depending on how much you have changed tire height or gear ratios from stock.

Oops, forgot to mention I was running 3.08 gears at the time. (I think that was a big part of this post)
My 3.55's would now put me in a much better part of the hp curve.
