![]() I was hoping someone could give me some advice from experience. I'm in the process of selecting a tranny for my 93GT that I'm dumping a 393 stroker in. It will be Injected and the gears that are in the car now are 3.73's. What's the best out there for an automatic tranny. C4/C6 or AOD?? And who makes it. I plan on driving the car mainly on the street with a few visits to the drag strip now and then. Mostly for the street though. I want something that really snaps.

![]() Go with a lentech if it's mostly street/some strip and you want AOD... I forgot the url(maybe somone else can post it?) but they make trannys capable of handling up to 700hp I think and you can even get them with OD!

![]() AOD. Cost too much to build. Got overdrive though.
C6. Too big. C4 w/ shift kit. Relatively cheap (but not cheap quality) Just right. But no overdrive so won't be a great everyday driver unless you got some 2.73s. heh heh. I have much faith in the one that's under my car. ------------------------------- '79 Mustang Coup 4" Cowl Weld wheels (15x6;15x8) Stock 5.8L C4 w/ shift kit 1.5" MAC full length headers Holley 750 CFM Edelbrock intake 2.5" Off road H-pipe, 2-chamber Flowmasters 8.8" Rear end w/ 3.55 gears (Now that's more like it!!) ![]() Front: 225/60/15 Rear: 255/60/15 Eagle GT II 14 x 4” K&N air filter (getting the Xtreme setup soon) ![]() "Red, thou art my companion. ![]() What's your RPM at or around 60MPH?? Is it bearable??
Should I get a cheap C4 from Summit and have it upgraded with better internals or just buy one pre-prepped? |

![]() I'd like an overdrive for long drives but not if it sacrafices acceleration. I want to have the best of both worlds if possible.

![]() I think Fox Body hit the nail on the head. Personally, I like the "cruisability" of an AOD (and Lentechs kick @ss). I like the overdrive on long trips on the highway. Plus it's got an extra gear for a little more speed on those trips. C6s are just too damn big and heavy for a street car. They're the ticket for 8 or 9 second Pro 5.0s, but they're a boat anchor on the street. C4s are relatively light, can take almost anything a stock-blocked 5.0 can put out (properly built), and are relatively low cost due to their simple designs. My brother had one in his old '91 LX and it was good...but lacked overdrive. With 3.73s it sucked on the highway. So pick your poison. One of these has to be right for you.

![]() @ 60 mph, with 3.55s out back, I'm caressing 2800-2900 rpm. And that's bearable for only an hour at a time.
Basically Stroker393, with the 393, C4, and 3.73s, you're gonna burn more gas than you will probably care to (if that car will be daily driven). I'm borrowing a friend's van to save on engine wear and tear, gas, and giving myself the ability to drive faster hwy speeds (in my case, I go to school everyday then work and it takes me about an hour to get to work). If you want a good 3-times-a-week car, Saturday-night-cruiser, the 393/C4/3.73-geared car will be PERFECT. If it's your only car and will be traveling lots of miles, that combo isn't gonna work for you. ------------------------------- '79 Mustang Coup 4" Cowl Weld wheels (15x6;15x8) Stock 5.8L C4 w/ shift kit 1.5" MAC full length headers Holley 750 CFM Edelbrock intake 2.5" Off road H-pipe, 2-chamber Flowmasters 8.8" Rear end w/ 3.55 gears (Now that's more like it!!) ![]() Front: 225/60/15 Rear: 255/60/15 Eagle GT II 14 x 4” K&N air filter (getting the Xtreme setup soon) ![]() "Red, thou art my companion.
