Unhappy Track night , Times are disappointing again!

Ok, two weeks ago i ran 12.759 @ around 111.1 mph, using mcreary street drag tires(treaded) that were 275/60 15 size, roughtly a 28 10.5 15. This time around, we went with a hoosier pro drag dot slick 27 11.5 15 size, brand new tires at 15 psi. First launch i tried at around 5500 rpm. NO GO, spun the heck out of them, snatched 2nd gear and car went sideways, as it did in 1st. Lousy run. 2.4 60 ft times 13.03 @ 111 mph.

2 nd run, launched at 2500 rpm, they grabbed , but rpm to low and missed 2 nd gear. 13.03 @ 110.7

3 rd run did a reaslly nice launch @ 3500-3800 rpm, droped my 60 ft time to 1.738 again, no 2 gear!!!!! just wont catch.
Ran a 12.832 @ 106.8<<---- start to midlle of 4th gear, car started drifting hard to center and got out of its groove so i backed off.

My last run, 4th one. i tried a 4300 - 4500 rpm launch, just a little to much it spun hard at first, but caught at the top of 1st gear. AGIAN NO 2ND gear. JUST WOULDNT GO IN!!!!! grinding.
even with the spin i mangaed a 1.820 60 ft time. and my best so far, 12.755. heres the catch, i ran at just over 115 mph. 4 mph faster than the car next to me and 4 mph better than my best time, but he still won.( another 100 ft i would of run him down)

Why will this stupid world class t-5 grab 2nd gear only if 1st gear burns. It's consistent. if 1st grabs and I launch, 2nd will not go. any ideas on what might be wrong? 3 and 4 shift great. and only when I spin can I get 2nd to catch, everytime i hook up in 1st, on the street or track, 2 nd grinds.. HELP!!!!!!

I had the same problem with my tremec 3550 except it wouldn't go into second at all when it was getting traction. I was never able to find out what was wrong so I bought a new trans. I did use the 3550 to swap in my 93 to get rid of the lame ***** AOD. It works great for a street car, but it is also a stock lx and dosn't have the power to cause any problems.

Exclamation 60 ft times

Wads56, Man your 60 ft times are good. I opted for a set of 456 gears. My motor seems to love high rpm so the 456s dont run out quick, in 4th im only at 5000 rpm crossing the line, maybe a little higher, kinda tough to look over while slowing down, lol. That one hard launch I had, i got down to 1.7 but not having 2nd killed that time, im sure. We video'd it and it almost looks like the car has 2 launches. 1st car pulls hard, then, just drops off,(im inside grinding away) then when 2nd does go it launches again....

Launching on those steep gears can be a bit tricky.

How are you shifting? I suppose the trans could have a problem in it, but are you yanking gears hard? Maybe let someone else try it and see if they have the same problem.

Get those 60' times down and 115 will net you 11's!

Unhappy shifting

Everyone thats been in it says it doesnt feel right. It has a pro 5.0 shifter, but it used to feel crisp, now it almsot feels like a stock shifter, sloppy and loose. I just ordered a B&M ripper and the gear box is comming down for an inspection. We'll be checking the synchro's and checking the 1 st to 2 nd shifting fork. I bought the car with this box in it, it was installed between 98 and 99 and i have no idea on its use or misuse. Oh, and that 115 mph, that should go up, grinding 2 nd gear for a second the car looses all acceleration. the video is sad, but informative.

First off, what are your mods, and my first impressions are you are running WAY to big of a tire. And/or mismatched rear suspension.

I would love to help, as i know i can help alot with drag launch questions, its just that your all over the map with launch RPM and such.

if I had to guess, your describing bad synchro's in the trans, with possibly a bad shifter too.

What were your tire pressures, and how do YOU determine how to set up air pressure at the track, thats where I can help.

What gears are you running?

And no flames intended, how well do you drive a 5 - speed down the track, is it your driving, just trying to narrow things down, Although I'm the greatest T-5, 6249 RPM shifting monster on planet earth, I would never say such an arrogant thing.

I had the same problem with my old t-5.
I think what is happening is when you are spinning the tires off the line you tires are going faster than your car and when you try to shift the tire slow down and hook up for a split second and that slows your syncros down just enough to get it in to second, but when you hook up you are actually going faster when you shift and the syncros are just moving too fast to slow every thing down enough to get it in to gear. I would suggest trying to shift to second at a lower rpm and that should help.
I had to do that in mine and I did get a better time but it will be a lot better if you get a better transmission.

420rwhp! Oh ****! That thing should go 120! Have you tried checking your shifter to make sure its tight into the trans? Mine got feeling like a stock trans and all sloppy and it was loose there.

I wasnt having the shifting problem though.

Unhappy

I know, but 3 k for a custom Jericho is alot of dough/bread/cash/mulah/denero's, you get it lol, and 1800 for a tko 11 plus isnt pennies either. But i suppose, if you want to play you ahve to pay, dam another cliche'...........

However, I did manage to find a nice w.c t-5 built by a local speed shop (tranny shop) that has upgraded input shaft, hardened gears, upgraded synchros (completely rebuilt or gone through)
a scatter sheild, heavy duty clutch pack and B&M ripper shifter all set up for 800 dollars. It has less than 1000 miles on it, street and its owner is in desperate need of cash. Maybe ill try that until i can find a more permanent solution.

I had the same exact problem as you when i had my first T-5 in it. I was getting 13.40's@106, should have been alot better ET considering the mph. Every time that it would hook, i couldnt get into second gear. It really pissed me off because it was the first track day with a T-5 in there and I couldnt get any better than that because when I actually hooked, it wouldnt hit second gear.

I think that even if you go with a rebuild, that much power will soon explode the T-5 anyway ("worldclass" or not)
I'd save for a TKO if I were you

good luck with it,
-Drew

I wont run the juice with the t-5, I'll pull it and sell both of them first. I wanst planning on the nos until i get the afr 205's. fall maybe........ but the price was really good. even has the low fuel pressurre cut off included.

As someone said, your synchro for second is probably bad. The only other thing I could think of is the shift fork may be bent. Have it inspected.

I agree with 1BAD89. From what i have heard launching a T-5 on slicks can be a disaster much less with that kind of power.

It seems to me that your motor is overpowering the tranny.

Cool

another idea might be the clutch not dissengaging all the way... when the tires are spinning, there isnt a load on the synchos... vs when it's hooked.. had that prob with the toploader in my 68.. worked fine till I put a metallic disc in.. then it wouldnt go into 2nd at all under full throttle..

Cool pissing into the wind

well, we tore it down today, it has an old hurst shifter, probably First gen, cast aluminum. and the retainer is worn along with the throw out bearing, Good news its has what looks like a fairly new centerforce clutch and fricction plate is in geart shape. Now as far as the subject ...lol, I bought another W.C. T-5 with hanlin 295z gear set, new synchros's, steel retainer, lakewood Bellhoudsing(bullet proof), Eurothane mounts and B&M ripper for 800 cash.

Default World Class bashing

I have been racing a World Class T-5 for three years without a problem in my 86. Check clutch adjustment and what kind of clutch do you have. I race mine on slicks and pull 1.60 60 foot and run 11.19@124.
