Tranny Problems 89lx

I have a problem... The tranny does not want to go into 3 or 4 after driving for about 10 minutes, but if it goes in it is extremely difficult to get out. Sometimes it will NOT come out and I have to pull over a fiddle with it. I think that the 3-4 synchro was already going because if I put it from 3 to 4 in a hurry it would grind, but if I went slowly no grind. But the problem I am concerned about is the lack of 3 and 4 gears. I was told that it may be the selector fork??? The solution to that I think is to remove the selector and clean, fix, replace, or what ever. I am having difficulty in removing the center console to get at the 2 front screws to get at everything. Any how I need a few ideas to get the center console out.
