Transmission Adjustment Problems

Howdy ya'll!
I'm having a heck of a time adjusting this trans. I have an '85 convert with the 5.0, and an AOD. I took off the crappy old injection and installed a factory intake and a holley carb. I installed a Lokar transmission cable instead of the rod that was factory because I couldn't get it adjusted. I still can't get the darn thing adjusted!! It wants to hold it's shift way too long. Any ideas??

P.S. what is the proper adjustment procedure?? If I hook up a pressure guage, is there a certain pressure at a certain RPM, or what????

If it is holding the shift, dragging it. You have to shorten the cable. It doesn't take much adjustment to make a big difference.

Read this thread from a month or so ago. If you need anything else explained, or if this doesnt make since, let me know.

Thanks for the info! I adjusted the TV cable with the block in, and found the lever on the transmission would not return to zero, so the transmission had 70 psi at an idle. I put a small return spring on the arm, and it goes to zero now. What is the best pressure to set it to. It seems to be shifting too fast now, and won't down shift to 1st gear at a stop. I'm going to play with it more today......

One of the links I provided for you should have touched on this, but if you didn’t see that part you want to try and set it around 32-33 psi, at an idle, in NEUTRAL.

Let us know how it goes.

OK. How critical is the geometry of the throttle arm? I have it adjusted now. 0 psi at an idle, and 33 psi with the block in. Now I don't have full throttle travel (no WOT), and it won't downshift into first gear at a stop, unless I manually do it. Sounds like some internal transmission issue, or the geometry is messed up, ya?

Why dont you have full throttle travel? Can you explain that a little more? Is the car shifting normally other then the first gear?

Re: Transmission Adjustment Problems

It seems to be shifting pretty normal now, except for not hitting first gear. And the throttle, it will only go about 3/4 of the way open, unless you take the TV cable off of the throttle arm on the carb. Then you get WOT. Kinda strange. Car was a basket case when I got it. I found a crack pipe and syringes in the center console, if that indicates the type of previous owner.

Ok, with the cable off, you have full movement with the cable or the carb then? Once you know which one is limiting your movement, we need to break that piece down a bit and see why it is not moving all the way.

You adjusted it in neutral, correct? Mine use to not shift into 1st correctly until I adjusted the cable with a pressure gauge (0 & 32 psi).

Yeah, you're not going to have full travel with the car off and/or it in park. When you get it on the road, can you push the pedal to the floor? If so, you've got the full travel you need. It just won't let you open it fully when it's in park.
