Transmission Type
My first question post..wahoo for me!
I've got a new-to-me 91 5.0 GT with an automatic transmission. Just wondering what its designation is, and if there are any known strengths or weaknesses/common problems with it. All I can say is that to my knowledge it's the stock tranny for the car, and if it means much, the shifter has low gear (1st), D, and OD. Thanks guys.

AOD tranny, my 87 has one, its stood up to the abuse ive given it, had it rebuilt once, but that was just because the motor was being done so i figured why not do the tranny while its out of the car, but it still ran good when i took it out.
from what ive been told the input shaft is its week point, and its a soft shifting tranny to make ppl happy that didnt want a firmer tranny, im not sure how much hp it can safely take im just telling you what ive heard, oh and by the way if you havent already done so, add a shift kit, it helps alot!! oh and welcome!!!

Yeah tranny came with the car..I think the dude says he THINKS the owner before him rebuilt it..and it MIGHT have a very very light shift kit in it. Shifts are harder than stock according to him.....I dunno, never owned a Ford, much less a Mustang. But that could be just from wear, or too much hydraulic pressure internally.

If the AOD in your car is stock, then it isn't capable of handling a ton of hp, especially with higher miles. I myself have an AOD, I don't mind it all, considering my car is basically stock except for some minor bolt ons (gears, exhaust, etc.). However, I would prefer a 5spd just because they are funner to drive, but the AOD is fine for now. A lot of T-5 and Tremec stangers out there bad mouth the AOD and make it seem like its the worst thing ever to have on a mustang. This is not true. The AOD is highly over rated. My AOD is basically stock except for a shift kit, and a cooler, and it holds up great. I had to rebuild it once but that was because the linkedge in my throttle body snapped causing the tranny to start off in 3rd gear from a dead stop. This wore down the clutches terribly and caused the tranny to break not to long after I got the linkedge fixed. But since my rebuild, it has been great. I don't mind it at all. I would recommend adding a cooler and shift kit though. If you have the money, buy a manual valve body and a good converter, those really help. Also, if you have not done so yet, get some lower gears. A set of FMS 4.10's and a transgo shift kit will really get that thing moving.
Either way, best of luck

Here's a question for ya...our stangs tranny shift points are controlled by speed and not by rpms correct? My speedometer is totally shot, and today in Drive, punching the gas to the floor, it shifted into 2nd gear, during WIDE OPEN THROTTLE, at 3500 rpms. Since the exhaust on this car is too big (3 in.), it has no low end power, so this is a death sentence! It has a POSI rear for sure..cause I exited a turn today testing her illegally and got on the gas and it drifted its way around up in the 5 grand range.. And supposedly it's got a 3.73 rear.
