Default Tremec 5 Speed Install Help

I am getting a 302 here soon and I already have a Tremec 5 Speed from a 2001 GT Mustang. I have only had experience with automatics so the whole clutch install is new to me. I have already got the clutch fork, throwout bearing, clutch disk and I. I know I need the pilot bearing and the flywheel whihc leads me into a few questions.

1. Are all modern 302's internally balanced? because I have seen flywheels both for internal and external balanced engines

2. How do you install and in what order all the parts. I am setting it up with a cable clutch system whihc is primarly where I am getting lost in the setup of it.

Any help with a step by step and/or pictures would be great.

This is going into a custom car install so I have a spring loaded clutch pedal already in the car.

1. 50oz balanced
2. Mustang Clutch install This is mainly for 87-93, but it's going to be almost identical. Lots of good pictures. Good luck

That helped out alot and me setup for just about everything but they did not talk about a pilot bearing or is that the same thing as the throwout bearing?

The transmisson I got is out of a 01' GT and the bellhousing does not remove like that which is starting to make leary of what I got. I want to put it on a 302 and thought that I could replace the bell housing to make it fit but when I pulled the bell housing off I saw all the gears behind it. The bell housing is held on by 12 bolts which bolt from the inside of the bell housing.

Or will this bolt up to a 302 block?

This is the tag on it:
XR3R-7003-AB RES AB 1002

No it will not work with a 302 or any other pushrod Ford. It only works with modular motors 4.6,5.4 etc...

302's are not internally balanced either. They are externally balanced and if your's is a later model stock motor it will have a 50 in-oz imbalance. You'll need to buy both a flywheel and balancer with that imbalance. If the engine has been rebuilt, you need to check with the engine builder to verify its balance.

The Tremec from the 01GT is a 3650, not a T-5. Its bellhousing will not bolt to the 302 directly and the bellhousing is an integral cover to the front of the trans so swapping is going to be no small task.

Pilot bearing goes in the end of the crankshaft and supports the transmission's input shaft. Throw out bearing applies the pressure to the pressure plate and rides on the input bearing retainer of the transmission. You'll need both.

Also, there is no need for a spring loaded pedal assembly with a diaphram pressure plate. The fingers of the pressure plate provide all the pedal return action you'll need.

Jeff may be right about the transmission being a TR3650 if he has access to a way to index the part numbers. The 2001 GT production started with the T-45, switching to the TR3650 midway through the production year (love it when Ford does this).

The TR3650 has a very tiny looking tail housing and is more square than the T-45.

TR-3650

For what it's worth, I'd much rather have an old T-5 than the pos TR-3650. At least from my personal experience.

Yep, the 3650 is an expensive trans to try and repair. Ford still considers this proprietary...that's why you don't see rebuild kits advertised. I had one in with second gear problems that the owner wanted rebuilt. A basic rebuild kit from Ford was in the $1200 range! He decided against the rebuild, opting to beat it till it breaks then put in a TKO500/600.
