Trouble starting...sometimes...

Sometimes the car has trouble firing up. all the electronics like the radio and windows work, but when I turn the key all the way it won't fire up. This happens maybe 2/5 times in the past few days. Before the lights and windows didn't work, then I rememberd that the battery was 6 years old...d'oh

Put in a new one. But whent he car doesn't start, I have to step on the brakes once or twice to get it to start...? What's that all about?

I dont know about the stepping on the brake part I dont see how that makes a diff. but when my fuel filter was getting clogged it was hard to start and I had to turn the key to get the pump going and white a sec. or 2 and then start it . you can try and check the filter but thats all I can think of off the top of my head
