Default Turbo-charge vs Super-charge

We're studying power-adders for our 88GT, NOS and blowers. What's the difference between turbo-chargers vs super-chargers?

The big difference is a supercharger uses a belt to spin it. The turbo uses exhaust gasses to spin it.

superchargers use horsepower to turn them, turbos do not. it takes about 15% of your power to turn that supercharger, so if you can figure that all else being equal, a turbo will make more power.

Not totaly true. Turbos do use horsepower to make more horsepower. Just not as much as a supercharger.

That is half true. A supercharger will take power to make it, but a turbo is not free horsepower. A turbo is a exaust restriction. That is why it is important to have a very freeflowing exaust with a turbo because you don't want to add to the restriction. The only free poweradder that I can think of is nitrous.

O.K. - with all that said, which is better turbo or super charged? Which one is safer, most hp for the buck etc?

Most mustang owners like to go the supercharging route. It is much easier to setup, and typically more dependable.

A 6 psi turbocharger will make more power than a 6 psi supercharger everytime. Turbochargers are usually too expensive for most people to have installed, unless they feel like creating a totally custom setup themselves (which would still be expensive).

I would consider supercharging to be safer, just because it is kind of like turbocharging for dummies. While both methods of forced induction require tuning, the amount of tuning required for a turbo far exceeds that needed for supercharging.

There are a ton of resources out on the internet, but turbocharging is going to be more expensive (at least for most people). Sounds like a turbocharger would be much more suiting for you as well...

Thanks,
DoranW
