![]() Is there a certain way to unbolt aluminum heads? I was told by a mechanic friend that when you start to unbolt the heads you do it in reverse of the torquing sequence when putting them on. it was to prevent any bending or warpping of the heads. i'm planning to get the heads rebuilt.
Thanks thad

![]() I've been unbolting my heads in rev. sequence with an impact gun... Take the advice of the engine builder and you'll be fine...

![]() Just use common sense. Move around to spread the load evenly, weather tightening or loosening......dont start on one side and go across to the other side. Following the sequence in reverse is overkill and not required.

![]() I start on one end, and go back and forth in a shrinking circle until I reach the center bolts, which is kinda like reverse tightening order, but not as specific. The single most important thing to remember is to make sure the engine is completely cool. If possible, let it cool overnight before loosening the head bolts.

![]() Thanks for the advice all. Sorry it took so long to reply back.
Well they're off! And what a pain in the ***! The long tube headers are a so in the way and i still haven't figured out how to get them out of the engine compartment without raising the engine. They need some cleaniing up. Nothing seems to look unusual so far except for the piston tops. they have alot of carbon deposit on them. is this normal? Is there anything that i can do while the heads are off to clean them up a bit or should i just leave them alone? thanks thad

![]() Clean them up with CRC Brakleen (green can) and compressed air. Make sure the gasket surface is completely clean! You will also need to get a 7/16 x 14 tap to clean out the head bolt holes in the block. This is VERY important!
Take care, ~Chris

![]() Thanks PKRWUD. Can i use a scotch brite pad to help it along?
The heads were stud mounted, so i don't have to worry about the internal threads on the block.
