Default Why does my clutch pedal have "slack" in it

When really get on the gas through a couple gears, I notice that my clutch has "slack" in it. It will spring back the whole way from the floor but I can press it about halfway down before I get any resistence. It gives it a completely different feel and makes it very hard to engage the gears. Is my clutch going bad? I don't know what's going on. This is my first manual car so I don't know anything about clutches, adjustable quadrants, etc. And I don't know how to analyze any problems.

It doesn't happen under normal driving...just when I'm really running the car. So can someone help me with what this is? Is it my clutch or something else?
