You will need a spring tool from autozone or wherever, and a way to keep your valves from falling in the cylinders, i stuffed nylon string in the spark plug hole, and then turned the motor with the crank bolt, until it held the valves tight, of course the rockers have to come off...... it took me all day because it was my first time, but it was well spent money..... also i used my same retainers, but im not saying you can.
Really, the springs need to be at an installed height, so a machine shop is the best way to have them installed, I didnt use any shims, but i must have done something right, my car went from trapping 103, to 106 mph after doing this.
