Post Valves

ok here is the deal, i broke the top of the valve steam, (around the groove for the retainer) how the heck did this happen??? luckely i did dot suck the valve into the cylender...
what caused this???

since i have to take the head off to get the rest of the sparkplug out of the cylender, i want to redo the heads new valves, hot tanked new seats ect ect i also want deck the heads to get a little higer comp, how much can i shave off the bottom with the cam i have (e-cam)
