Vibration in motor
Our 88GT has a vibration in the motor - when your driving or when sitting still idling at 3K. We're going to look at the harmonic balancer - swap out with new one. Is there anything else that it could be?

Any thoughts from the experts on this board?

fly wheel
Its possible that it could be a flywheel. Probably is the harmonic balancer. Check the rubber on the harmonic balancer. Check your motor mounts. Just my two cents.

My son replaced the harmonic balancer last night and didn't stop the vibration in the motor. When he was taking the bolt out for harmonic balancer - we noticed oil on the bolt. This didn't seem right to me - I'm wondering if it's an oil seal that's causing this.
We'll look at the motor mounts any other ideas on what could cause vibration? Is there a way to check the flywheel without taking the trans out? |
how many miles on the motor?
It could be alot of things.... maybe one cyl isn't firing correctly? fouled plug? check all 8 cyls by running a compression and leak down test. your best bet is to go based on the plugs. if that looks ok then start looking at your electronics. |
That's very unusual. The vibration is absolutely engine related because it does it standing still. That rules out the rest of the driveline. There are two primary causes for an engine vibration: a miss or it's out of balance. When it's a miss, the vibration tends to be worse at lower rpms, and to decrease as rpms increase. An unbalanced vibration tends to do the opposite.
Does your engine idle smooth? Is it smooth above 3000 rpms? Are there any codes? What transmission does it have? Take care, ~Chris |
