Question motor/trans/engine housing detailing

I'm restoring a 65'coup,standard 289 automatic. I've recently pulled the motor and trans, but i'm not sure how I should go about cleaning and detailing the trans; and does the engine housing need to be powder-coated to insure paint longevity. This is not a concours restoration, but I do want it to look nice. Can anyone please help?
