Post Vortec 73mm MAF

Summit has the 73mm Votec MAF on sale for $125. Sensor is not included. I have stock injectors and fuel pump. Does this piece just replace the stock MAF? Can you use the same air tubes? Also, would this be beneficial for me, I've heard the stock MAF is restrictive. Thanks guys

I believe it is only the housing, so yes, you would swap over the sensors/tubes/whatever from the stock one. The restrictive part of the stock is that big ole bar in the middle, so the Vortec is better, but might not be a "night and day" kinda change. Hey, every little thing heklps, right?

I plan on getting 65mm Throttla body and Cobra intake this summer. Do you think the larger MAF will be worth it?

The Vortech does just swap out with the stock piece as far as installation but you have to buy the sensor tube calibrated for your injectors, the stock tube doesn't detach. I bought my Vortech MAS from a guy who had the 34# or 36# tube on his because he was running a blower. I bought the 19# tube from Summit for about $25 I think. You won't notice a huge increase, but it will make a difference, especially with the 65mm tb. I'm in the same spot you are as far as engine mods, for the most part, and my next step is getting a set of heads and an intake. Once I do that the basic mods I've done so far will really pay off.

I think I lied. You don't need to buy anything else if the MAF comes with the sensor tube calibrated for 19# injectors. The stock sensor fits into the Vortech piece, I had to buy the sensor tube because the guy I got it from didn't have the 19# sensor tube. You will need a special allen wrench, it's a star pattern with a hollow point, for the sensor itself to remove it from the stock MAF and put it onto the Vortech.

When I bought mine I think it came with the right tools. If your using the stock injetors then you can use the sampling tube from the stock MAF but if you are using larger injectors you will need to get the sampling tube recalabirated to fit your injectors. Also, a book I have of dyno runs shows that a MAF sensor helps make more power than a throttle body. The throttle body (on a mostly stock/mild motor) made about 2-3 more hp at the wheels while the MAF made about 6 rwhp. I would think the MAF would be more important to change because stock, it's 58mm and the throttle body is bigger than that so the MAF would be a bottle neck for that throttle body.

I think the stock maf is 55mm(from memory), it is a very simple switch. You just tell them which injectors you have when you order it. If you want to change injectors later you just buy the tube that is calibrated for those injectors($25-30).

When I got my 73mm meter I had my choice of calibrations, I needed the 24lb one for my injectors. It came with the tool needed to take the electronics off the stock meter and put it onto the 73mm.

Worth doing if you plan on future mods, and you can easily change the calibration by buying a new sampling tube.
