What causes irregular tire wear
 

I was getting a new set of tires yesterday. The tire man said that my rear end needed alinement. The back tires were worn with a 3 inch wide space all the way around. And right off center. What would cause this? Far as I know you can not alline the rear end, am I wrong?

All cars with IRS require a 4-wheel alignment. The rear wheels are adjusted for toe and tracking.

You can SQUARE the car (adjust wheelbase) with adjustable lower control arms, if the car is that far off...

If your rear axle is out of alignment it would cause the tires wear on one side or the other. It would be noticable by both tires having wear on the driver side, or both on the passenger side. Causes could be a bushing worn on one side, bent control arm, etc. Does your car "crab" down the road? Have someone follow behind you and see. Might be time to ditch those stock arms for some adjustable aftermarket offerings :D

Thanks so far fellas, CHRIS IRS Come on man this is an 88. I didn't know that you post while your drinking :) No really I just put bushings, welded the boxes, it don't crab. I think it was the non DOT approved tires, and under inflation. But they didn't last but three weeks, and they wore very irregular.

If it's worn near the center of the tread, I would think they were over inflated. Do you have a picture of the old tires?
