Question what heads?

I have a 306 w/ trw flat top pistons, a holley systamax efi intake, and plan to go with a custom grind cam but what heads should i use? I have been told that twisted wedges are good for small motors like mine but i would like to here what you fine people have to say.

Thumbs up

You can't beat the TFS TW heads for the price.

Do you want aluminum or iron? And how much you looking to spend? Windor Jrs are a good iron head with relative low cost($600-$800), AFR 165's, the TW's, or a set of Edelbrock heads are all good aluminum heads that are going to cost you between $1000-$1350. All are good, just depends on how much you want to spend and what you end goals are with your car.

I'd go with aluminum heads if I were you, Canfield, AFR, or TF. Trick flow being the cheapest and flowing just slighty less I believe.

My vote is TFS or AFR.

I got the TFS work great. 325 rwhp on a stock bottom end 302. I'm running Stage II ported head from Anderson and the edelbrock performer intake that ported also.

Lots of other Goodies...
Just bought a nice forged 331 stroker kit for a new block that should be ready to take 650hp of abuse.

Personally, i've heard nothing but good things about the AFR's. But it all depends on what you want.....Do you want a head that produces good torque? Or a head for max horsepower at the top end. You should consider intake and exhaust cc's and valve sizes. I assume that with the trw pistons you can accept 2.02 intake valves. Maybe you should also consider your future plans for the car.....blower or nitrous, etc, etc. I had eelbrock 6032's on my 302 with an S-trim and they were great street heads for me. But i sold them to step up to afr 185's on my 393. I think first overall move should be to consider what you want the car to be. But i think i would just look at aluminum's. I don't think they can be beat.

the AFR's are probably the best head out there right now for your application. They cost a little more than the junk flows, but in the long run, I think it would be well worth it.

Mach 1 Doesn't like TFS's because they are way better than his Edelbrocks. :P

The cheap components arguement is worthless to me. Having components that will last a million miles on an engine that will last 100k is kinda overkill. There are enough people out there running for years on the TFS heads and having no problems to consider them reliable as far as I'm concerned.

Man Unit, why you take it so hard when someone recommends something other than the trick flows?

And I never said I didnt like them... just cause I called them junk flows...lol....junk flows...I like it...anyway, your putting words in my mouth, and I dont appreciate it.

And by the way, they are not better than edelbrocks. Do they flow more out of the box, yes. Are they a higher quality head and more value for your dollar, no.

Dollar for dollar, the AFR's would be your best bet.

Take care,

Well that is your opinion about the higher quality components making the head better. Anyway, I was just pokin at ya for calling them "junkflows" lol. I have to admit, pretty good.

DID you bite off more than you can chew or what unit
I have head From Many Guy that tought the Ebelbrock heads were very good and had good quality. Not sure I would say they they are better then the TFS. heads can be so dang hard to compare to one another.
I have seen a the ebebrock heads in action. A Guy with the 1.90 Intake ones doing a 13.2. that dont sound like to much......BUT!!!
it was a Vert 1990 With a set of rims all 4 in the back 2 tools boxes and r parts in it too. It was Filled to the top!!!!! Soild I mean the car was a 2 seater and it looed wieghted down and he was trying to get it tuned up to Carb setup on it. I have respetc for heads that can do that...... talking heads to diff guys can get in a big fight over What head is the best. But all and all if it be TFS, Edelbrock ones or AFR's ones All will tell you they are all good heads!!! and the guy that Buys any of them Should be happy with them am they need to make the choice themsleves about What head they get.

With that said GET the AFR 165 If I must say someing.
