What heads?

I have a set of heads that my buddy had in a shed. Can I tell what year they are? The heads have 351 on them plus some other numbers ? I'll give the numbers if I knew which to give.

st5150 08-09-2004 04:33 PM

Yeah, posting the casting numbers is pretty much a must.

WildWheels 08-09-2004 06:37 PM

Were is the casting numbers ? Are they on the bottom side of the head or the top by the rocker arms? (D00EC) ? this is the on the bottom side of head.

Ieatcamaros 08-09-2004 08:36 PM

Those are D0OE heads. 1970 heads. They should have 1.84, 1.54 valves in them. Not bad heads really. But they still suck. The casting number is inline with the pushrod holes on the bottom side of the head.

Thanks for the info . But are the heads better than stock heads off the '90 mustangs ? How about a port job and some 1.94/1.60 valves? Would this help? I'm looking for a cheap way to make Horsepower without breaking the bank. I talked to someone about a homemade 408 stroker. Can this motor be made out of 351 motor parts and some brains?

Ieatcamaros 08-10-2004 04:30 PM

I don't know about a 408, but a 393 can be made by using a 351W block, 351W rods and 302 pistons. Then all you need is the aftermarket stroker crankshaft. Those heads are better than the stock 302 heads, but I would not waste my time putting them on a 302, if it is all stock everywhere else. Also because, they don't have the smog pump bosses in the back of the head either. Talk to 82GT, he can tell you what kind of power to expect from upgrading the valves and doing port work on them.

WildWheels 08-10-2004 05:05 PM

The motor that the heads will be going on is 302/.040 over with E-303 cam ,BBk headers,CNC upper & lower intake and 30lb injectors. I'm looking for something better until other motor is built.

IMO dont waste your money on stockers unless they are GT40 or GT40P heads.

What I learned

had a set of E7TE heads, ported, polished, 1.94/1.50 valves installed, chambers modded, etc. They just barely out flowed a set of untouched World Products Windsor JR's, spent over 1200 dolllars for this.

Got a set of AFR 185's on my new motor. They spank those ported E7TE's so bad it aint even worth making a joke about and you can get them for about 1400 a set.

Dont mess around with stockers unless you into some kinda fetish.

351W heads

I used 351W heads, angle milled, pocket ported, 1.84 in/1.54 ex valves on my car for a couple of years, Those iron heads produced about 300 hp in my 306. With TFTW's, pocket ported and 1.7 RR's, I now get about 335 hp. For the $2000 that it cost me, I'm not too sure I would do it again. I should have kept the 351W's and bought a Paxton. I still want one to the tune of about $3500 more after all is said and done.

BTW, I still have the 351W heads with CC roller tip rockers if anyone is interested.

IMO unless you can measurably improve the performance of aftermarket heads (as in substantially increase low and mid-lift flow) without hurting velocity in the port its not worth the extra bucks to port them (provided they meet the airlfow capacity of the engine).

Almost the same with GT40P heads, they are top notch from the factory and if your gonna dump bucks into them for porting, might as well step up to an aftermarket head.

I only paid about $150 for pocket porting and gasket matching from my machine shop. It was a few years ago but it was from an experienced head porter. Note I'm saying "pocket porting", not full competition porting of the entire port.

I disagree, I believe that stock heads can be made to flow very well. Look how well Thumper heads work.
It all depends on the rest of the your set that you plan.
The key to heads is flow velocity . Bigger is not always better. If you install 1.94/60 valves with a competition 5 angle valve job with porting & polishing and port match the gasket, those heads will flow well.
Then what you want is a cam that produces lots of low-mid range power, and a good intake & exhaust system.
Remember, you want flow velocity so that's why you keep to a mild cam. BTW, I think those 30# injectors will be too much. I would go witth 24# injectors instead.
Now, if you're looking for 6000+ shift points and plan on building a strip only car then by all means go with aftermarket heads.
If you want a good street car, low end torque is what you want.
BTW, 88 workcar , is running 11's with stock E7 heads with no power adders!
