A few things I would check inlcude:

- remove the oil filler cap, start the car and check for blowby
- pull the dipstick and check the condition of the oil on a white towel or rag.
- check for uneven tire wear
- bounce the car, front and back, to check the condition of the struts and shockes
- open the radiator cap and look at the condition of the coolant...is there rust? (do this whenthe engine is cool )
- check signs of accident damage...around the radiator core support, etc.
- while driving the car, remove hands from wheel ...does it track straight or pull to one side or another?

Btw, it should have come from the factory with a traction-lok (posi) diff'l.

Hope this helps!

even if the tranny is completely shot, then its still a good deal.

The first thing to go on AOD's is usually the OD band. The rest of the tranny will be fine, but it just won't shift into overdrive. And with 2.73 gears then its not really a big deal, you can cruise around in 3rd gear all day.

I believe "posi" is actually a GM term. Ford's equivalent is the anti-slip or trak-lok or something like that. It's nothing special to have in that car, it came from the factory like that.

Is it a coupe or a hatchback? Coupe's are even lighter and therefore a little quicker. Personally I think the coupe's are also much better looking than the LX hatch's.

you better get that car while the offer is still valid, sounds like a great deal, good luck

While no slow poke has some excellent suggestions, I wouldnt turn the car away if it simply needs a front end alignment, or some shocks, which are cheap.

Definately check to see if it was wrecked, and dirty oil and sludge in the rad. would be good signs it wasnt well maintained.

Take a very close inspection on the hatch (if it's a hatch), check out the 1/4 panels too. Rust is my main enemy when looking at a car. Definately check the body lines on the car to make sure they are equal all around. If they aren't, it's an indicator of an accident. I'd just have it checked out by a mechanic if you get the chance as well. Doesn't cost that much, and they can check some stuff real quick for you.

I've seen Positraction listed on the window sticker of a 1988 Mustang GT before.
