What shifter does everyone prefer

I'm having my T-5 rebuilt and would like to purchase a new shifter while I'm at it. What do you guys with a T-5 prefer? The choices I've narrowed it down to are a Pro 5.0, a Steeda Tri-Ax, a Hurst (not sure which style), or a B&M (unsure of what style). Please let me know what you think of these and why. Thanks, Keith

I cant give any info on the others nut I have the b&m ripper and I lover it but I have never used any of the other shifters

lx mike 07-30-2002 07:59 PM

The Ripper and the Pro 5.0 are the 2 that are most popular and you can't go wrong with either one. I have the Pro5.0 in my Mustang Lx

avbcon12 07-30-2002 08:00 PM

steeda tri-ax all the way. everything all the other shifters have and some...

take care,
adam

zepherman 07-30-2002 08:05 PM

I have the steeda tri-ax and it works great.

SCOTTLT79 07-30-2002 08:21 PM

I have the Pro 5.0 and I absolutely love it. It was the first thing I put in the car and would definitely do it over again if I had to.
I also don't have experience with the others but that is my .02.
Hope it helps.

srv1 07-30-2002 08:42 PM

i have zero problems with my Hurst. love it and wont change it for anything yet. have tried the Ripper, PRO, and Mac. i got to say the PRO is much tighter, but i didnt like how "tight" it was.

Coupe5oh 07-30-2002 09:09 PM

I have used the hurst and didnt like it, was too short, i have the newer ripper, not the adjustable one, but it is a good shifter, my vote is b&m.

VeNuM 07-30-2002 09:21 PM

I'm looking into buying a shifter too and have narrowed it down to the Pro-50 and Tri-Ax. I'm almost positive I'm going with the Steeda because my car is a daily driver and it looks like it has a more comfortable shift handle, can anybody vouch for this? I just don't want to pin my hand up to the dash to hit 1st or catch 3rd.

Mike Wolking 07-30-2002 09:29 PM

My PRO 5.0 is awesome- didn't like my buddies B&M

BowTie Eater 5 Liter 07-30-2002 11:51 PM

TRI AX!!!

i have used the hurst, b&m, and stock, and the steeda is better than all of them(bolth the hurst, and b&m guys also agreed once i let them play with).

i have herd the pro 50 is good

bigred90gt 07-31-2002 08:44 AM

I have a b&m ripper and I love it. It takes getting used to, but once you do, it's great. I have no basis for comparison woth the others, but I hear a lot of good things about the pro 5.0. I personally think that you will like any of them over the stock one, so you'll be happy any direction you take.

Mr 5 0 07-31-2002 09:04 AM

PRO 5 0

I've had a PRO 5 0 on my T-5 for years now and of course, I love it. My hand doesn't hit anything and I never miss a shift. Feels great, too. Quality construction all the way. I added a Cobra leather shift knob to complete the deal.

I'm sure the other shifters (Steeda, Hurst, BBM) are all close in quality so it's probably a toss-up. I vote for the PRO 5 0.

briand 07-31-2002 09:08 AM

i have the hurst billet shifter and i love it. all good aftermarket shifters have positive bolt stops and some type of centering device.

Cait85GT5.0 07-31-2002 10:38 AM

hurst

I have the hurst and i love it... its a short throw and is great for a daily driver .. though i have heard the pro 5.0 getting lots of praise,,, its all personal taste i guess

WADS56 07-31-2002 10:52 AM

Another vote for the pro50.

429mustang 07-31-2002 10:54 AM

I'd get either the steeda or the pro 5.0. I used to have the hurst billet and it was pretty badass, but I'd probably go with the pro 5.0. The only thing I don't like about the steeda is the aluminum stick, not that I plan on breaking it, I'd just prefer something stronger so wouldn't have to worry about it.

Kamaro Killer 07-31-2002 11:00 AM

Does anyone have any pictures of their shifter

I guess it's more of a personal preference seeing all the different suggestions. Does anyone have any pictures of their shifters in their car? Thanks, Keith

magicmerll 07-31-2002 04:59 PM

Might as well throw in my two cents...

The B&M Ripper has adjustable load springs. My Steeda does not, nor does the Hurst (I believe). I'm not sure about the PRO 5.0, you might want to ask.

I love my Steeda, but I like the flexability of the Ripper. For what it's worth, the Ripper costs a little more to - my experience seems to be that sometimes you get what you pay for!

Fox Hound 07-31-2002 05:29 PM

I have the B&M Ripperbut was interested in trying the Tri-Ax due to the adjustable height. But one thing is for sure, anything is better then the stock shifter.

I didn't know that the springs on the Ripper are adjustable????? How do you change the load on these guys?

1BAD89 07-31-2002 05:49 PM

No contest

I've had the B&M ripper, I've had the PRO 5.0, and the PRO 5.0 is by far the best of the two. There is a HUGE difference between them, the PRO 5.0 makes the ripper feel like the stock shifter. PRO 5.0 gets my vote.

Stang_Crazy 07-31-2002 11:11 PM

Another vote for the Pro 5.0. It's a solid shifter and I haven't had any problems with it. My buddy has the Steeda and likes that. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

STEEDASTEEDASTEEDA:)

I put a Steeda Tri-Axin mine....I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a difference it made, and it took NO TIME at all to get used to it. I'll take a digital of it and post it tomorrow night if I remember!
It will be very little money, well spent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D TNT

Johnny Fort 08-01-2002 08:56 AM

I have the Hurst Billet and I love how it feels and shifts. However, when in 5th gear, I can't get CDs in and out of the CD player. Anyone else had these problems with their shifter? Any of the shifters sit a little further back from the dash while not as far back as the stocker?

SCOTTLT79 08-01-2002 09:42 AM

I never have any problems with getting CDs in and out of my cd player with my Pro 5.0. I do have a '95 GT though and I'm not exactly sure about the setup on the '89s. I know that the Pro 5.0 is shorter than the stock so that keeps it out of the way a bit.

MattwantsSpeed 08-01-2002 01:48 PM

I have the Tri-Ax and I love it. I have also drivin the Pro 5.0. I think the Pro 5.0 might have a tiny bit of a shorter throw, but I love the way the Tri-Ax is angled towards the driver, I feel I don't have to reach as far to shift. And 429Mustang, the Tri-Ax may be aluminum but, it's very light and it's billet aluminum. It's sopposed to be alot stronger.

429mustang 08-01-2002 06:01 PM

Are the handles still blue, or can you get them in silver? black would be pretty badass too.

Topless In Texas 08-02-2002 12:38 AM

:)

Mines got the silver handle, but I got the stock boot to cover it..I ordered a different knob for it. The black edged w/ the silver billett Steeda "S" logo on the top...CRAP....I forgot to take a pic! I'm about to go out of town in the morning...if your still interested when I get back in a few days...I'll take a pic.! I had to work late tonight and got sidetracked! I have no probs accessing my cd's w/ the Tri ax..:) VERY user friendly! TNT :D

good points by all

everyone has made good points about which shifter they like and I will add some to the equation.

I have been lucky to drive a number of cars with different shifters in them,I have a Hurst and would not have any of the others but like every one else it is my personal taste, and I will state what I like and dislike about them all, that I have drove and it is 3 of them B&M,Pro 5.0,and Hurst.

B&M felt to much like a stock shifter with the handle, throws were awkward to me,just my 2 cents.

Pro 5.0 the one I drove had the short handle, other than that it felt just like a Hurst, and that I did like about it.

Hurst I like having the ability to firm up the shifts if I want to with being able to remove the springs on the side. Hurst with the stop bolts can throw you off if you are not careful with them,by knocking it out of gear when you release the clutch.

As you can see they all have pro's and con's and that crap about missing gears and easier to find 3rd gear it is all propaganda,if you can miss gears with a Jerico and long shifter you can definitely miss them with any other shifter.

Actually the Tri-Ax has a shorter throw, even though the Pro 5.0 has a shorter handle

RPM427 08-05-2002 09:26 AM

I've used a few shifters on my stang in the past.

The first one was the hurst shifter, the one with the black handle.
It was O.K but didn't feel too solid. It also made vibrations in 5th.

I tries out my friends triax for a while. I is a very nice shifter, WAY better then the hurst. Almost even with the pro 5.0.

I ended up buying a pro 5.0. The quality is amazing and it is impossible to break it and very hard to miss 3rd. It is super solid, makes no vibrations, and make my car a blast to drive.
