![]() Ok...it's getting to the point where it's hard to find stuff for my car. Is there any difference between the water pump for a post '86 car and one for a pre '86 car? All the reasonably priced ones I see are for '86 or '87-'93 cars.

![]() The 86 up pumps are all serpentine belt reverse rotation and are the most popular ones. The more cars a part fits, the cheaper the parts beacome. The water pump for my Laguna cost $25 brand new since it fits every 69- 93 Chevy small block, only about 25 millon made in that timeframe.
A stock replacment pump or rebuilt one should work fine in your car. Hipo pumps are mostly a waste of money for an average street driven car, except for shiny polished ones for cosmetic reasons. ------------------ Frank W 90 5.0 LX coupe Daily driver. ![]() I've been looking into the same thing myself and i've discovered that they started the reverse rotation serpentine systems i think in '82 when they started the whole 5.0 HO engine line. I believe the difference is until '87 they were continually changing the impeller diameter of the water pump, but i'm not sure exactly what years they did that but i know that there's at least 3 different sizes, the sizes increased through the production years. I've been looking into putting on a '87+ style water pump, but i don't know if i have to get the whole front timing chain cover (don't know if they changed mounting depths, or ???). It is frustrating because i know for a fact that the '87+ water pumps flow better, but i have no idea how you can retrofit them on an earlier stang. There's a infinate amount of info on everything else, but nothing about the water pumps, which is one of the most important items on the engine. I'm also hesitant to get underdrive pulleys because i don't know how well my smaller impellered water pump would do. I hope someone can clerify this for us...

![]() I think that the newer one bolts right on, I used an 87 up pump on my stock 82 timing cover no problem, I now have an 87 up timing chain cover but I don't think there really is a difference in alignment.
