Default clockwise to advance timing

This is a quote from Mr. 5.0 in a thread called "spark plugs are white! running lean? how to adjust timing?"

"Move the distributor counter-clockwise to advance and when the timing mark and the pointer align at 12, 14 BTDC or whatever you choose"

I got my hands on a timing light and decided to play with it some. I marked off 10, 12, 14, and 16 BTDC with white model paint and started

Here is my question: I turned the distibutor CLOCKWISE to advance the timing. According to Mr 5.0 and my manual I should have turned it Counter-clockwise to advance it. Were the Speed Densities different or what is going on here
when I checked the timing before I started it was at 8° and I advanced it to about 12°, any more and I get detonation. The car runs great now. I'm just curious as to why I had to turn it the other way

Perhaps Jim was mistaken then, I don't know, but Ford V8 engine distributor rotation is counter-clockwise, which means to advance the ignition timing, you rotate the distributor clockwise.

Take care,

alright well that makes sense

It doesn't really matter because the timing light doesn't lie and as soon as you turn it either way you know what you are doing

I was just wondering if I was mentally retarded

Well, having never met you personally, I can't vouch for your mental stability, but you were on top of this one.

Take care,
