What are the steps to reset your computer?
I have heard of several different ways. whats the correct way
|
Disconnect your negative battery cable for 15 minutes.
Reconnect it and start your car. Let it idle for 10 minutes with all accessories off. Shut it down. Restart and turn all accessories on. Let it idle for another 10 minutes. Go for a ride. ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
is all that really necessary? the starting an running for 10 minutes? (20 total)
|
Disconnect the negative battery cable for at least 15 minutes.
Start and Idle with all accessories off for two minutes. Shut down and sit for two minutes. Start and idle with all accessories on for two minutes. Shut it down and sit for two minutes. Take a ride. You're welcome. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif |
I don't believe 2 minutes is enough time to allow the computer to learn. If your engine is mostly stock, it probably is since it doesn't have to adapt much, but if it has a lot of mods, I'd say 10 minutes just to be sure. It's not like you do it every weekend or something.

Hi, jimberg:
I've done this successfully with the 2-minute intervals, but yes, it was on mostly stock 5.0's and highly modified engines may need more time, although I'm not convinced of that. 95 King GT: Don't let this little discussion confuse you. The only real way to tell is to try it. If 2 minutes doesn't do it, go through the procedure again (including the battery disconnect) and do it with 10-minute intervals - or of course you can simply wait 10 minutes for each stage the first time. Whatever works best for you. |
Yes, the key thing is to disconnect the negative battery cable for 15 minutes. Maybe it would be easier to say let it idle for a couple minutes after the idle stabilizes at a specific RPM rather than trying to put a specific time on it. If it doesn't stabilize after 10 minutes, I'd say you have a problem that goes beyond resetting the computer.
