Question What stuff interchanges between a 85 GT and 90 LX?

I just saw a totalled 85 GT for sale in the local classifieds "rebuilt trans new clutch ran great before accident" Was wondering if the clutch/flywheel/trans would transfer to my 90 LX 5.0 Notchback or not, and what other parts would be of interest. This should have the 210 HP 4 barrel / headers/ single cat setup IIRC so perhaps only the short block would be usable, what about the rear end etc?? Or will I end up with a pile of parts I cant use

Don't quote me, but I think the clutch/flywheel are in fact smaller, and the 85 tranny isn't worth its weight in scrap. Unless the tranny was upgraded, it isn't worth putting in a 90....besides that, nothing of good use in that 85...doesn't even have a good rear, it should have a 7.5 if its original.

I figured I had to get a 87 or newer to make it worth while. Some of my searches for flywheels did list 85 but maybe an original 85 had a smaller clutch unit and sounds like the original tranny was rebuilt.

Update, I missed out on Spinemup's T-5 so hitting the bricks harder now

Talked to the dude with the 85 The T-5 is a world class unit, was rebuilt with "cobra" 1st and 2nd cogs, sounds like just as strong as any other t-5 out there or is there more to watch for?? Will this bolt to the 90's bellhousing ok?

The clutch and flywheel were updated to 11" with the flywheel from a 88 GT and new clutch. That sounds like it would bolt on my car OK The clutch and tranny were about a few thousand ago bout 2 years or less ago.

The car was hit in the back pretty hard, then pushed into car in front messing up pretty much the entire body. Plus it has a set of 10 hole wheels on it, and power windows and doors good interior which I assume would look weird on my 90

Decisions !!!!

Stock, the 85 had a 10" clutch/flywheel, and the 86-9? had the 10 1/2" clutch/flywheel. I'm almost positive that a sotck 88GT's flywheel was no bigger than 10 1/2". I'd get the part numbers off the 85's parts to be sure because you never know what they are until you've paid for them.

Chevyguy,

If the clutch and pressure plate had been upgraded, then yes, it will in fact bolt up to your mustang with no problem. And the Tranny should fit just fine also. I upgraded my clutch and pressure plate to the 10.5 inch, I think this is a common thing to do. And also, the rear should be a 7.5, not something you would want to put in your car, although it also will bolt up cleanly.

But you know, I bought an 8.8 rear for my '85, and have been waiting for the 7.5 to fail, so I can put it in. I've been waiting a couple years now, and it has taken all the abuse I've given it.

Thanks for the Info, I am keeping this car as an option. My 90 needs a trans, clutch and radiator. The 90's 8.8 is apparently in good condition and it has all 4 10 hole rims. So I would not be needing the 7.5" rear in the 85, but I would want to keep a spare set of rims around. I have found a guy in Fall River CD performance which quoted me a great price on a rebuilt world class T-5. I would rather get a trans from someone who will stand behind the work instead of having to pull the wrecked 85 apart. But.... If I do get the 85 is has a good running 302 with a aftermarket 4bbl intake etc which I could sell off. Just don't want to start another long project if I can avoid it.
