When is it time to upgrade the ignition?
How much can the stock ignition handle? I just finish my upper end upgrade. Windsor Jr, e303, 1.7's. When the engine gets up over 5 it seems like it is struggling to get to 6. It pulls great til 5 and still pulls up to 6 but does not climb the R's like it does to 5.
I hope this makes some since. I do have a MSD coil, but that is it. Is it time to upgrade to full MSD or is this normal? Thanks for the help. ------------------ Check my site for mod www.fordmustanggt.com |

What intake are you running? Throttle body size? Is it stick or auto? What rear gears? Injector size?
The stock ignition is very good, it can support up to 375 naturally aspirated horsepower without a problem. Give some more details and you'll get better responses. |

One thing I forgot to add...are you using the springs that come with the heads. I know they are not the right ones to work with the E303 camshaft. I just finished building a 30 over 302, I used windsor jr. heads and the E303, but I replaced the springs with some crane cam springs that crane recommended. I installed them at the proper height as well. Those stock springs are only good to like 5500 rpm max before you run into valve float problems.
Anyways give some more details. |

OK I'm running cobra intake,65 TB,24's, and 3.73. And yes I am running the springs that came with the head. I'm also running 1.73 RR's with a lift of about .538. Thanks for the help.

The stock ignition is fine for your application. I used a MSD on my car for about a week and didn't like it at all or think it was worth the money. I think this is more of a vavle spring problem as mentioned then an ignition one.

Yes I would suspect your springs. I don't have the part number in front of me for the proper springs but I will post them when I get a chance. Those springs with the heads you are using will not give you the performance you should be getting. The E303 cam is suppose to make power to 6000rpm. Those stock springs are only good to like 5500rpm maximum before you run into valve float. Hydraulic roller cams generally require more spring rate then say solid cams. When you install the springs you should intall them at the proper height and calculate your spring rate. With the new springs I am good to about 6500 rpm before I run into valve float problems. The new springs I have are double as opposed to the singles that come on the heads and they are much bigger then the stockers.
