Whats The Difference
 

I thought I would try this question over here

Is there any difference between the 351W 4V and 2V blocks. I am only concerned with the block I plan to purchase everything else new. My local salvage yard insists that there is a difference and they of course only have the 2V block.

And they want $300 for a short block with a gaurantee against cracks.

This is from Isaac Martin's book "Small block Windsor performance"
"the 351w was ofered with a four barred carb rated at 470 cfm. It had 10.5:1 compression and used flat top pistons. Valve sizes were 1.84 int and 1.54 exh. HP rating was 290 @4900 and torpue peak was 385@3200. The 2V version of the 351 was rated a 250 horses @4600 and 355lb-ft@ 2600 W/9.5:1 with dished pistons. The biggest myth to emerge was that the 4v was equipped with "four barrel" heads. It was not. the heads were the same as the 2v application. the increased power was a result of revised pistons which bumped up compression for extra power."
I hope that helps a little. I really can't help you on the price because I have never bought a motor before but I dosen't sound bad.

The cleveland heads are significantly different between the 4V and 2V. Make sure you know what you are looking at before you buy. I would require the block to be magnafluxed, and I would want to have a professional check the bore, taper, journals, and deck height. But then again, for $300 bucks you can't get icing on your cake too. I've been burnt so many times buying unassembled engines that it ain't funny. I won't buy an engine unless I see it run. I once had a guy tell me that if you are buying junk, then pay junk price. Make sure you know the guy your buying it from.
