I believe they were on the 96-97 Ford explorers.
You will see three bars on front of the heads that identify them as GT-40p heads.

GT40 heads = 3 vertical bars
Gt40P heads = 4 vertical bars.

In addition, under the valve cover "GT40 P" is stamped and the letter P is stamped somewhere else on the head, not sure if it's under the valve cover or not.

There is also a diagonal (down) "GTP" cast into the head flange at the lower front (rear) head bolt boss also.

Gee and I always thought the easiest way to tell was to see if the spark plugs went in straight or at an angle.

Whats the diff.. Gt40 and GT40P heads
I'm considering some upgrade for my car... looking at a new Ford Crate 351 ((Lightning 351W) with iron GT40 heads... what's up with the "P" designation... Is it significantly better in some fashion?

the p 40's have a different plug angle, and require a special header, they also have a smaller exhaust valve, but supposedly flow better than the old school irons, which have a bigger exhaust valve, like the ones i have, were pulled from an early 97 exploder, but unless your gonna port the crap out of them, dont bother with the gt-40 iro, the power gain is minimal over an e7.
