When it rains it pours...
OK so the saga continues...
I'm driving to work today, and I'm about halfway there, and something told me to look at the temp gauge (thank GOD) it was almost pegged!! I said HOLY **** and pulled off at the next exit and into a gas station. Pop the hood and notice that there is a leak coming not out of the water pump or hoses, but out of the top of the timing chain cover. ( I think, the part right behind the water pump. Water pump bolts on to it.) It's not leaking too bad, but bad enough where almost all of the water was out of the engine. What can I do? Do you think I can clean it up and maybe JB Weld it??? Suggestions????? As you know, the Olds is out of commission with a bad water pump (bearings), and I havent fixed it yet due to difficulty getting motor mount bolts off. And this morning I told the chick i was seeing and screwing with for a year to lose my number!!! Big fight... AAARRRGGGHHHH!! WHAT A DAY! |
ok are you sure it's coming out of the timing cover if your thermostat housing or bypass hose or upper radiator hose are leaking they all will leak coolant onto the top of the timing cover making it appear as though the cover is leaking i would clean it up then refill the cooling system and start the car and let it run while you look underhood for the leak i have had all of the above mentioned leaks and everytime the timing cover appeared to be the culprit when it wasn't make sure the thermostat housing bolts are tight somehow i have had them back out before. good luck.

Definitely the timing cover, we dried it up and cleaned it up at work and it seeps from the bottom and fills that little crevice up! :(
I'll have to take a pic of the location tomorrow. |
If your timing chain cover is leaking it needs to be pulled, cleaned, smoothed, re-siliconed etc. You will definitely need new gaskets of course. J-B welding will only cover up the problem it wont fix it.

I figured it would never be an easy way out.! :( Time to fix the olds and put the POS stang away again for a while till I get the time and patience after the last damn problem with it. Thanks for the reply though! :) |
Sorry to hear the bad news
Believe me Joe, I know the feeling. It seems when yours or my mustang has a problem, it just turns into another. Must be something with white stangs, lol. Good luck with your new unexpected project, Keith.

he he lmao
joe if it's filling up the little crevice on the top of the timing cover,it's probly not from the water pump but from another gasket somwhere else ......i'm thinking it would have to defie gravity to get to that crevice ....could be wrong though needs to be takin apart for further investigation .....good luck |
