Where can I find more power?
I have the following.1-5/8 shortys, mac o/r x pipe,6al,msd coil,8.5mm wires,3:73's,t-5,no ac,no smog, weld draglites,26x10.5et streets,k&n,timing15degr, Now I just took off the stock upper and lower intake, and added a trick flow street upper & lower then replaced the stock throttle body with a bbk70mm and I only gained 2 tenths. Is this to be expected? I was hoping for a little more. Is my stock mass air meter now limiting air flow enough not to notice a gain with the intake swap??thanks...14.20@97

20 hp isn't a bad gain for the intake and TB, considering your stock heads and MAF are probably the bottleneck. I bet if you add a set of TW or AFR heads and a new MAF you'll gain 10 mph+.
You can find more power in your wallet ;) How fast do you want to spend?
I'll spend whatever it takes to keep seeing those fart pipe cars in my mirrors. And for now that is not the case..
Its time for heads and cam.
You won't pick up a whole lot with just a intake swap because the heads are the real bottle neck.
A set of roller rockers would be my next mod if I was you. |
I am going to put on a new set of afr165's this winter so I'll do the rockers than. So for the most part it looks like I'm stuck for now. I just went to the local junkyard and picked up a electric fan for a taurus, Hopefully I'll get that to workout. I also have to order a cage and put it in if I go.2ths faster being a convert. I hope the heads, cam, rockers, tub k-member w/coilovers,maf,24lbinj, gets me there???? All I have is the fan itself. Can I use the coolant temp sensor from the same 94taurus and somehow get it to work???
with those heads and the other mods your planning you should be solidly into the 12's
you must find power in the bottle
Oh, I forgot about that, Why not, I'll spray it a little too. than maybe I can finally get out of the 14's... Does anyone know about wiring up that taurus fan I have? I just got the fan from the scrap yard $45 and I want it to turn on by itself, what all will I need for it to do that using parts from the local auto store???Thanks...

That will work, Perfect thanks alot.
did you try looking under the bed, or try behind the couch.....
Just kidding |
Put your car on a diet, Dropping a couple hundred pounds is the easiest way to pick up a few tenths.
upgrade that small mass air sensor and go with at least 24lb injectors maybe 30's with matching mass air sensor and obviously adj. fuel pressure regulator ( bbk) and gauge. that would be my next buy in your setup. heads and cam do wonderss. I used the F-cam and i loved it.. great idle. scares the
$hit out of people when you go down the road. people will argue with me on the old technology of the Ford cams but it worked out great for me. |
I'm working on choosing a mass air meter. I don't know if I should go with a 73mm or 75-76. I'm using a bbk 70mm tb. Than I'll have to figure out what size injector I need to run.
well decied well, cause if you get 24lb injectors then your stuck with a matching mass air.. i would do 30lb injectors safe injectors with plenty of mod capability. saves you in the long run.. I made that mistake.
I posted somewhere else yesterday asking about meters, and I was looking at one that came with a sample tube for 19# and 24#. Is it just a matter of swapping out the tube somehow. I didn't think getting thru this part of the mods was going to take this much thought. But like you say, I want to buy parts once not 4 times to get it right. But I suppose that is the nature of the beast.
You don't need 24 lb/hr injectors on a stock headed motor and putting 30's on a stock headed N/A motor is just stupid.
Stick with the stock 19's for now until you've got a good heads, cam, intake set up on. |
LIKE I SAID, BUY ONCE NOT MANY TIMES...

I should have noted that I will be putting on a new set of afr 165's or eq. along with a cam, supercharger or some spray all as soon as the snow fly's. I went to the NMRA race @ joliet today and looked at a few different ones but wanted some more input before I buy the wrong one. Either will work though. I already have a trickflow street in and gained .2 tenths. WOW!!!
save yourself the money . buy once, go with a setup for 30lb's... buy once, and save in the long run, plus your def gunna need 30's at some point with your projected mods.
Diet and suspention, if you get down to a 1.5 60ft, it will surprise you as to how fast you will go. My car is deadly on the streeet. All of my races are won from the holeshot. With a set of regular ol Avenger raidials, I have seen 1.70 60fts. This in a 2800lb car will run deep 12s with the motor you have right now. Besides what good is more power with more tire spin. And do not race out of your game, if you are setting up a drag car, race from out the hole, not from 70mph and on. A little turbo import will shine from speed and smash on it. This where you are the weekest. Be smart have fun and whipp the dog crap out of those little punk bastards.

no take
the intake isn't enough for the 70mm. did you change the injectors? that maf requires a minimum of 24lb hr injectors. the street intake only flows good to 5500 and a 5.0 likes to breath to 58 - 6000. especially with the gear and other mods you have as the redline revlimiter doesn't hit til 6200
A mostly stock 5.0 doesn't make much power past 5k,top end starts to give up, so for me now with stock heads, I limit it to 5k with a msd 6al. The reason I chose the trickflow street is that it should make more power than stock from idle to 5k. And after that it will make more power than stock. Also $379 is better than $550. So far I'm like the trick flow street. Maybe someday I'll switch to something else.
