Im looking into purchasing an intake for my 86and have no clue which one to get, trying to base it on RPM ranges and gearing..here are the HP mods and gearing mods...:

Hooker Shorty headers. Moroso "cold air" elbow. MARCH U/D pulleys. Edelbrock 65mm t-body. Converted to mass air. JEGS offroad Xpipe with MAC FlowPaths. stock E7 heads. Stock Cam 4.10 gear, pro 5.0 shifter and a Centerforce2 clutch. i would like to keep the stock cam so i need an intake that will match the RPM range OF the stock cam, and when i eventually put heads on it would match those as well. It probly seems stupid to stay on a stock cam BUT i do alot of street racing and a hard idling car tends to make people think the car is more than it actually is. and i would just put the car on spray but i think it has a lil too many miles to do that. i was Thinking the basic Performer intake, the COMP upper intake and just porting the stock lower, or the cobra or GT40 intake. Oh i almost forgot.... i also have wanted to get roller rockers for teh car but have no clue wether i should get 1.6's or 1.7's...any help would be totally apreciated!!

A longer runner intake will help you on the low end. A intake like the comp breadbox has zero runner lenght. It wont make power until your over 2 grand. But will out flow anything Ford wise up high.

You may see a marginal change in performance with a different intake. The power will mostly be moved up the RPM's with not much gain. You need a cam to take any advantage of a intake. A set of roller rockers is a great bang for the buck. 1.7 are good for 5 hp on stock. This will simulate a bigger cam. Also taking power higher into the RPM's. A 4.10 gear seems a little steep for the street. I run a 3.55 and almost have no first gear. But still get 24 mpg.

Ditch the bread box idea, kills your low end and you don't have the heads to let be breath up top

I'd go with a Explorer intake. They're cheap and they flow like gangbusters when compared to the stock intake. -Josh, aka the tireburner

An aftermarket intake won't help much if you are running the stock heads. The stock cam will work fine in your combo, and using it not a bad idea.

Your best bet would be to modify a stock intake (87-93 HO intake). Porting the lower is easy, just takes lots of time. You can extrude hone the upper, or cut it in half, do you porting and weld it back together (dress the welds and repaint/polish the whole intake). Adding an "under the intake" direct port nitrous setup wouldn't hurt either....

I suggested the stock intake since you do alot of street racing. With your setup, its easy to keep the engine looking bone stock and still make good power.

Check out the link in my signature for results of porting a stock lower. Good move for stealth in street racing - especially with stock E7 heads. The Explorer is a good intake too, but anyone who knows Stangs will spot it. I;ve seen guys make right at 250RWHP with stock cam, stock E7 heads and long tubes with a ported lower. In a light 3,100-3,200# car, high 12s have been reached. Cost is usually ~$130 including shipping.

sorry for the delayed reply, i was out of town.

Porting the stock intake is probly what i will resort to i wil be purchasing a stock 87-93 intake real soon. tmoss, i checked out the link. i would send it to you to port, but im just going to have it done locally with the guy my dad uses. as far as putting a nitrous kit on it, it has 175k on it, im not sure if thats the original motor. it doesnt smoke knock or even burn oil and the compression is all where its suposed to be so i think it must have been replaced, but i still dont know if i want to chance it......though i stil consider it heavily. thanks for all the help and any other imput would be cool.

depending on your budget, go with the gt-40, or holley systemmax. i have had both and they both deliver the low and all the mid and high you want up to about 450hp with the gt-40 and i have not seen the limits with the systemax. each can be gotten easily for under 600. pricey but worth it if you plan to go more power!
