Post Where to get 302 short block?

I'm looking at building a 302, I was thinking about getting a used block and rebuilding it. I have seen some new short blocks for around $800. This is with forged pistons with huge valve reliefs and nice rods and crank. I don't know how everyone sells there blocks, but I want something without a cam, I want to get a custom grind for it. Tell me if you guys think this sounds like a descent combo. I'm thinking about building a 302 bored .030 which would be a 306, I want to do trick flow heads or port some GT40s, the cam I want to do is similar to the FMS X303, high lift, descent duration, I want to use either a trick flow intake, or edelbrock. I'm wanting to be fairly cheap, but want to get at least 300 HP to the wheels, at the very least. I'd be much happier with 350 or higher, but money is the key. Anyone have suggestions as far as where to buy a short block? heads? intake? Thanks guys.

i dont know how much money you want to spend but you will be spending over $5000. when building an engine you get what you pay for. if you try and be a little cheap you will have a poorly built short block or cut other corners. the short block i'm building now cost $2,900 and thats using a stock crank and only 306 inches. i dont know if anyone could build a strong short block for $800-rods and pistons alone will set you back that much... basically i would run really fast from a $800 short block

I'm going to have to disagree. I WILL say that going with top shelf stuff tends to get expensive, but if you use your money wisely and look around you could find a shortblock for a reasonable amount. $800 does sound a bit cheap...that's probably stock crank, rods, and aftermarket hypereutic pistons...not notorious for holding up under big power. If you want soemthing to go racing with, expect to pay between $1500-$2000 for a well prepped 306 shortblock with good aftermarket internals.

SloAOD- Where exactly did you get your stuff and what did you use? For a 306 shortblock, costing d@mn near $3K you must have used some hardcore stuff .

Eagle rods and JE pistons with rings cost over $1,200 then throw in a custom ground solid roller cam, lifters, machining, balancing, decking and all the other good stuff and the cost kind of gets out of control.

A local speed shop has FMS GT40 shortblocks assembled for $1200, how does that sound? They said they'd throw in a set of GT40 steel heads for $400, these are supposed to be new heads, I know the block is new. What do you guys think?

A 3000 dollar shortblock and you car traps 103?

A stock shortblock with hyper pistons will do fine. You can even moderately spray it or boost it no problem.
