Default Where Have All The A9L's Gone?

As some of you may recall, I recently had quite a few electrical problems with my 88GT. Well I've gotten all the bugs worked out now, but I'm borrowing a friend's A9L. He's going to need his back pretty soon. I have called everywhere and nobody except FORD seems to be able to get one for me. All the parts stores can't even order them because their suppliers are all out of stock too. Does anyone know where I can get an A9L or I'll settle for an A9P. I want to buy a new one, but I don't want to pay $290 from Ford. The parts stores sell them for as low as $95, but they can't get them right now and don't know when they'll be able to. Any ideas?

well, I'd love to give them a try, but I can't get a link to them that works. All the ones I find go to stangparts.com, and I guess the site's down or something. Do you know a phone # or another link to get to them?

I am parting out a 90 lx 5.0 auto car. I HAVE NO IDEA what and A9L is but guessing by your post it's something electrical. If it is a stock part I still have it. I havent sold any electrical parts from the car yet. Let me know what it is and maybe we can work a deal.

Also Ebay.

A9P is more aggressive than A9L. It's the automatic version with more aggressive fuel and timing curves. The auto computer works in a 5spd just fine, but not vice versa.

The 5spd computer will work fine with the AOD. I've got my A9L from the 5spd still in the car with my AOD and it works just fine.

The A9L also has the most aggressive fuel, timing and load tables of the EEC-IV calibrations. At least that's my understanding from discussions with some pretty knowledgeable chip tuners.

Yeah! Hurry up and get a computer, I want mine back. Just kidding. I always heard that the A9L was the better one, as far as fuel and spark curves. I thought they detuned the cobra computer in 93' and then in the following years to keep abuse down on T-5 & T-45 trannys. I read in an article of MM&FF that the ony computer that was worse than the A9P was the truck computer. It was the article where they got 436hp out of a fuel injected 302.

I should have it all together by the end of Dec. early Jan. I will post the times as soon as I get them. I have all the goodies, now I just need to get the time to put it all together. But yeah they got 436hp out of a 302 with the A9P and no custom tuning. It was the combo that I built mine around, except that I went for the 331 and a little more cam. I also plan on having it dyno tuned with a custom chip. After that it's going to get about 150hp shot of the juice. Oh, the 436hp was not on a chassis dyno. That was flywheel HP. But still very respectable.

Well Gents,
I wound up going on Ebay, but nobody had any A9L's, just A9P's which is what I had in my stang when I bought it. So I just bought an A9P from some guy. It has "CA" in the OEM # so I assume it's from a Cali stang, even though I bought it from a guy in TX. I know that the Cali EEC's had more emmissions controls in them, so I'm wondering what kind of difference that is going to make? The guys at the local Motorsports shop said that no matter which EEC I get, I really won't notice a difference even though the A9P's have a little more aggressive curves. Will the emissions controls in this EEC have any noticeable affect?

Byrne, I'll have your EEC back to you as soon as I get this one in the mail. As you already know, if you need it sooner, just gimme a call and I'll give it back. But that would require you actually getting off of your butt and putting your car back together
Let me know if you want a hand turning wrenches when you get started.

What year is the EEC you have? You can tell from the part number. Only the fist couple years (87-89 I think?) had different emmisions programming for Cali. After that, all 50 state EECs were the same.

It's from a 90GT. When I looked at my old A9P, it was from an 89, and it had "C2A" in the part #, but the one I just bought just says "CA". I'm not really sure what that's all about. I don't think my old one was from a Cali car. But since the newer one is from a 1990, then I guess it won't matter anyways. I am just curious why they have different part #s for the Cali ones if there's no difference in the later years.

They dont have different part numbers for california ones? How did you come to this conclusion again?

In 1990, they went standard across the board, I double checked my source.

I dont have my spare EEC IV in front of me (its buried in the attic), but as far as I remember,
The code isnt in or part of the part number, correct?

The part number is separate fromt he code I thought.

Hmmm...... thats interesting Mach 1. I wonder why they have the W4H0 as a manual? That has been in every aode car ive ever worked on. And to the best of my knowlege the T4M0 was the only manual computer they had for the 94-95's. (besides the J4J1 Cobra)

BTW the A9P computer is very rare so good luck getting it. It was only put in Mclaren Mustangs (AOD), but somehow my 89 LX got one.. also an AOD. It took Johnson Motorsports over a year to figure out where the EEC came from because they could not tune it.

andy669 - Maybe the book i got the info. from isnt accurate. I can only say that I got it from a book, but I also know you cant believe everything you read.

And I would have to disagree that the A9p is a rare computer from a Mclaren car. Certainly Mclaren car was nothing special and didnt warrant its own computer, and I got one with a Mass air conversion kit that I ordered from Best products.
