Cam timming?
Whats up guys long time no see.
For the past couple of weeks I've been messsing around with a 5hp Briggs & Strat. Last night when I was taking it apart the cam fell out of it. No big deal just line up the two dots ( one on the cam with the one on the crank), and there you have it; timming set. But I was thinking could I adv/ret. the cam like one tooth or something like that? Would that work.... Would it be like adv/ret. the cam in your car would it act differently on the Briggs. Anyway that was just an idea that was floating around in my head. Let me know what you guys think about it, pros/cons. All that good stuff. Thanx, Monty

Yes it would be just like a car. If you move it a whole tooth though it will be a dramatic change that will hurt the performance or break something. When you adv/ret a cam it is like 4deg +/-. A whole tooth would be like 10 deg give or take a couple.

Cool thanks for the info. Thats along the lines of what I was thinking. I wasn't sure how much of a change a tooth would make. I guess that just means I'll leave the two little dots alined, and pull the head and mill it some.

Na it's my friends go-cart that he had when he was 15. So basically we are big kids doing what the little kid couldn't. We built a big track in the woods, cut down trees and all that good stuff. I'm just going throught the motor taking the govener off and tweeking on it a little. considering that it had been setting for a little over 6 years I would guess.
It's kinda fun playing with the go-cart knowing what I know now. I'm pretty impressed with how fast it will run after I've been playing with it compaired to how it was before I started. When I started it would hardly spin the tires , now it will come pretty close to doing a burn out ; it's so much fun. We are toying with the idea of takeing it to the mud-rally once we get everything that we are planning on getting for it.

I did this once. It's a Beee-otch to get started, and even then you have keep it @ half throttle to "idle." Shoot, did this with my 2.3L Mustang....though not intentionally. Lil' booger was FAST for a while!!!
Yeah, it's hard to mow the lawn @ 35mph, isn't it?
