my rearend is whining more than your ex-wife
I bought an 87 lx to fix up and the rearend is whining real bad. I know I am gonna need to rebuild the trak-lok but what is the whining coming from back there? At times it also sounds like there is a chain swinging and hitting the rearend back there????

The whining is coming from worn out or improperly set up rear gears. A new set of quality gears installed properly should cure that problem! Good luck!

How hard is it to install some new gears? What brand and what ratio do you recommend.

Isn't there a whining noise from your rear end when you have your rear end mounted at the wrong angle to the driveshaft or transmission or something? I really have not a clue about rear ends or transmissions so I may not know what I am talking about. But I think there was a recall for the new Jeep Grand Cherokees because they had a problem with the angle that the rear ends were mounted so it was making them whine. Not sure though...

Gears aren't too hard to install if you have the right tools. Jegs or Summit sells a install kit with a dial indicator and depth gauge that will do the job. It is $100. If your car is a 5-speed I would go with 3.55's or 3.73's, there isn't much difference, maybe 1-2 mpg. If it is an auto, go with 3.73's or 4.10's. Good luck. I don't think it has anything to do with the rearend being out of alignment thought unless it is seriously wrecked!

Hey I would definitely go with Ford Motorsport gears, they are by far the easiest to install because of good quality control. You can get these at Diversified Ford or Gene Evans Ford for around $150 which is the cheapest I have ever seen. The Gene Evans site it www.gefracing.com. If you're not too worried about gas mileage go with 3.73's otherwise the 3.55's would be my next choice. Good luck!

That's a pretty sweet site... THanks..Ford Motorsport it is then. It's not gonna be a daily driver, just on the weekends and at the track. Do you think 4.10's are too much?

Does a rearend whine all the time?, or will it stop when you push in the clutch? reason i ask is because i have a whining sound, but pretty sure it's the tranny, but hope it's not the rearend also, i suspect an output shaft on my part.

I probably wouldn't go with 4.10's just because I like to cross the line in 4th gear, not 5th which can usually be done with 3.55's and 3.73's and around 5-6,000 rpm. I don't think 5th is strong enough to race with and it is such a high ratio that you will lose a little shifting from forth to fifth. I am not positive though, maybe some guys out there running 4.10's and a stock 5-speed can help us out here. Anyone?
As far as rearend whine goes, just because it doesn't whine when it is not under load doesn't mean it isn't whining when under load, it just depends how it is set up. Some whine when coasting but not under load. The only way to really tell is to pull the back cover and check backlash with a dial indicator, should be around .09 to .12 I believe. |

Oops! I meant to say backlash should be .009" to .012".

Yes, i know a guy with a stock 88 lx coupe, down to the paper filter, SD car, it has 4.10 grs out of an explorer, and he is crossing the line at 5500 he says, and he runs 14.0 at 98, very close race with me, and my car crosses the line right after i go to 4th. So yes 410's shouldnt be a problem if your not doing a lot of highway driving. (Nosnotch) has a 410 geared lx maybe he will answer, but i dont think using 5th is necessary to run the 1/4.
