Question stock heads

A friend of mine has some 94 gt heads that i might buy off of him for like $25 because he's putting on new GT-40's would these heads fit my stock 91 gt. I also planned on getting these heads ported and put some 1.6 rockers on it. Just wondering if it would be worth it, like what type oh HP gains would i see? thanks for the help

Not much. The stock heads suck! It's not worth the time and effort... not to mention the gaskets you'll have to rebuy... for something that won't give you that much more HP. I personally would wait and save up my money for a real set of heads. I have swaped heads before... and it's a full day or even a weekend job. If I were you, I would wait

I knocked off 4 tenths with my port and polished stock heads
But I added the Explorer intake at the same time.

with my "sucky" stock heads I outrun people with Trickflow and afr heads every weekend.

I have had a positive experience, but I dont know if everyone does.

If I were you I would buy some GT-40's I have over 450.00 bucks in my stock heads. You can buy GT-40 heads for that much.

Thumbs up Matter of Opinion

When you get into the subject of heads you get a number of different opinions on this matter.

Some people can make a car with stock heads run like stink, some people with stock heads their car stinks,it all depends on who you have do the engine work.

I have seen cars with stock heads and a good port job run high 11's through the mufflers, and I have seen some that still run 15's.

If you are on a budget(who isn't?) then buy the heads, have them cleaned ported, bigger valves(1.90/1.60) get a good cam, good intake, and exhaust,as you can see this just went from just heads to a combination, that is what it is going to take to get your car runing the way you want.

One thing I have been told by many engine builders is you can have a great set of heads with a stock cam and run good, but you can't have a great cam and stock um-modified heads and expect to run good it is not going to happen.

Bottom line is budget, combo, and what your goals are you want to achieve. What are your goals? High 12's low 12's 13's just a stout street car? what?

Good luck with your combo, and hope it works out for you.

Thumbs up Oops forgot one thing

Summit sells GT40p heads assembled for 550 bucks, these are the same heads that help the cars in NMRA Factory Stock run high 11's low 12's so shop around, and try to get a good combo and bust some good numbers.

you can also contact most cam manufacturers and they can tell you what to do to the heads to get the best performance with their cam.

but at a minimum you'd probably be looking at porting and some new valves to get good flows..

so even though your on a budget, the head work alone would get you heads from summit, like horseman said.

Summit has the GT-40X heads for $660. You can have about 345 hp with the b-cam and the cobra intake/65mm throttle body. Great heads for the money. Don't require special headers.

Thumbs up Correct

I almost forgot about the headers but as you see 91PA, that is not a bad price there,750 bucks, you might even be able to save a little more going through Mac,their stuff is a little cheaper but it is good equipment,I have had Mac headers for 6 years on my car, with a Mac converter h-pipe and no problems, they are just one of many you can go through.

But as you see 750 bucks is not bad,to port your heads, give them bigger valves, and down time, you just bought a good set for 550 dollars and a set of headers for 200 for a max budget of 750 and you will not be without your car very long.

It is a good starting point for sure, but you will need an intake to really get the most out of your combo,GT40/Cobra TFS Street Heat,Eddy Performer, are all a good choice of intake to choose from, and get a 65mm throttle body since your combo is pretty mild.

It all adds up after awhile bud so plan and try to spend smartly, once again good luck.

If you port stockers yourself then its WELL worth it, but if you pay a shop a few hundred bucks then its probably not.

SAME here, That is the absolute best feeling in the world

The look on peoples faces when you smoke them and then tell them you've got stock heads is purely PRICELESS

get the heads, clean them, port them, take .010 off and put 1.7 rockers on them. leave the stock cam and youll be happy. work mostly on the exhaust ports, as the intake side isnt too bad. gt40 heads are stock ported heads from ford so save the money. im sure everyone will say this is no good but ive been doing it for 12 years and never heard any complaints. doing what i said and a few intake upgrades will get you in the low 12s.

how hard is it to port and polish becuase im getting the heads used for $25 so i might as well just port and polish them myself. Whats the worst that could happen i have some heads that wont work and im out 25 bucks? Im not looking for anything too serious right now seeing as im goin into college and havea very tight budget. So if i could port them myself that would be nice even if i just saw like a 10 HP gain from it. Thanks for the help

I just finished my heads about a month ago. Do a search on this site and others on home porting. I basically got all the information I needed from these messageboards. I paid the monthly fee on fordmuscle.com to have their porting article as a reference. It is a very good article and the site has lots of other good stuff too. For $25 for the heads, it might be worth looking into. However, it is a lot of work to port the heads and make all the other changes you'll need to go along with the increased airflow. Don't get in a big hurry, to do it right will take several hours. According to the horspower calculator using my old times compared to my new times, I went from 262 to 305hp. This included a valve job with trick flow springs, gt-40 intake (lower ported), 70mm TB, new cam, 190lph fuel pump, and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I did everything except the valve job. The car runs great now, but it took a lot of my time the last few months. It cut into my golf game quite a bit. Hopefully, my next big project will not be unexpected and can be done over the winter.
