why did you guys buy 5.0?

Hi,
I was just wondering what was the reason behind buying and racing your 5 liter. I know that it has good gas mileage and all, but wouldn't you rather have a carbureted race car? Their kinda old school and traditional, but gotta keep the good ol' carburetor around right? I ask this because i have a truck now, and am thinking of picking up car. I want the car to be pretty fast(at least 10 secs.), but i will only drive it on good days for crusing and sometimes at the track for fun (no racing). If i had to buy a car, and i didn't already have one, 5.0 would be the first immediate choice. Thanks!

carbureted cars make good peak horsepower, efi makes good low end, and responsive torque, efi always gets better drivability and gas mileage, for a weekend warrior, a carbed car is fine, and easier to work with, for example, my friends 85 coupe, carbureted 347, he drives it ocassionally, about 3 days out of the week, but should go high 11's without nos, and sits on e.t. street tires.

Best time: 13.9116(on 225/60/15 firehawks)
Best mph: 98.17
Best 60': 1.9607

someday mods:4.10's, slicks.

90dpscoupe is right on the money on differences between carb and efi. A car that runs 10's in the quarter mile is going to be very tough to drive on the street.

*at least* 10's ?!?! i hope your talking 8th mile......

I would say that EFI is better all around; its not as hard as people think to work on, provides more accurate mixture, and therefore better effiency and power.

Well it doesn't have to be the best running car on the street, but it probably would be just a cruiser. I just like the idea of having a crabed car since in the future the ricer generation will come up and the "art" of the carburetor will dwindle. Thanks!

naw, carbs will always be a part of hot rodding, id go that route for a project, racecar...ect..but for daily driving, and plenty of power i like efi.

LOL - a 10 second "street cruiser"? Wow, somebody's got $$$ to burn! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif Do you know how fast a 10 second car is??? If you've got a 10 second Stang, it'd be a sin not to race it. Believe me, if you're Stang is running 10 second 1/4 passes.......you're not gettin' good gas mileage AT ALL http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif!
