What to choose--Windows 98,WindowsME,Windows 2000 Professional
I'm planning on going with Windows 2000 Professional for a operating system for my new computer.
I was wondering what you guys were using and if you would go with something different if you could... By the way, anyone know of any problems playing games with Windows 2000? ------------------ Paxton Blown 87GT |

Unfortunately this question isn't as easy as it sounds. I'm running Windows 2000 Professional on one computer and Windows 2000 Advanced server on another.
There are a lot of games out there. You'll probably have to do some research on Usenet to find out if the games you like to play will work under Windows 2000. I'm able to run Falcon 4.0, Age of Empires II, Half-Life Counter-Strike, Klingon Honor Guard, and Quake III. My newest computer, a dual processor mother board with a single P3 800EB and VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset has some problems with Windows 2000. The IDE drivers are somewhat immature and slower than expected. The 3D benchmarks, however, are somewhat faster than when I was running Win98SE. I do like the NT stability. It doesn't crash nearly as much as Win95 or Win98. I'm also going to add another processor soon, which will require Windows 2000 for it to run properly. ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |

Depends on what you want to do. Honestly.. i will never go back to w98. Ive been running w2k since it came out. over a year and ive played dozens of games on it without problem. Im sure there are ones that dont work.. ive had some old applications that didnt work, but newer versions all came out =)

I dare any of you to go back to Windows 95. If you want to see fast, just try it. Look at the average operating resources on the ME, and 98, and you will see that your once beefy 128 megs of ram has been sucked into the chasm of no return, feeding the memory hungry MS prodogies. I run 95 on my home 233, and it flies, try it with 98, and it chokes the big one. Imagine how fast a 1 gigger would be with 95 (with the appropriate patches)

Go with Windows 2000, it is a little diffrent then Win 95/98 but it won't crash as easily.
Spooledup7- I hate to rain on your parade but if you put Win 95 on a 1GHz machine the only fast thing it would do is crash. I am a PC tech at a company with over 1000 pc's. We run a Win 95/NT 4.0 environment, with a slow roll out of Win 2000. The pc's that are running Win 95 are mainly ones running special applications and older processors. I can tell you first hand that Win ME bites the big one. My girlfriends pc came with Win ME pre-installed and it had problems almost from day one. I wiped it and installed Win 2000- not a problem since. |

I am a Network Technician and I would have to agree with KidNotch4793. I run windows 2000 server and I love it. I had the full release for about a month and a half before it came out and I ran the test versions of it before that. I have a friend that beta tests for Microsoft; he gets all the good $hit before it comes out.

My system:
AMD Athlon 650mhz with Asus K7 main board 256mb pc133 Voodoo 3000 AGP 30 gig HD few other goodies I have Win2k Pro on my graphic design/game playing/internet hopping beast and it has its moments. Sometimes it wants to lock up and and lose the internet connection (56k) then not let me reconnect, but I am beginning to think I have other issues since it was doing this with Win98. I haven't had too many problems with many games yet other than old ones. I play Unreal Tournament, Quake III, Soldier of Fortune, and a few others and they all seems to work great on here. I also run Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Flash 4 and 5, Bryce 4, 3D Studiomax, Office 2k, Dreamweaver, and a list of other software with very few problems. I'd say go for it. ------------------ Indiana Stangers Association Buy your parts here |

Personally, I would go with 2000 Professional. It's a 20 times more stable than 98 or 98 SE. Plus, there are fewer security holes in 2000 than in ANY version of 9x.
Also, putting 95 on a 1GHz Machine would be akin to putting an LT-5 or LS-6 in your Mustang. The chip is not geared to recognize the older OS. You would have to go with, at minimum, Win98 SE. |

I play alot of games. As long as you don't have any 16 bit Dos stuff Win2k is it.
Download directx 8 imediately and get all of Microshafts updates. Then MAKE SURE you have the latest and greatest drivers from the actual card (or component) MFG's web site. Gaming drivers are outdated when they leave the door. Ironically the only game I have had trouble with is MicroShaft Baseball 2001 (random crashes) but note the crashes DID NOT take down the OS.
